Admissions process

How does the admissions process work. Do all aplicants go through a screening from a regional admissions rep or what? What qualifies you to go to the "next round" of admissions

OK, to find this I just went through and deleted close to 200 subscribed threads. Thanks for giving me the incentive.

Anyhow, read through this old thread. It may answer many of your questions.

K thanks this is kinda random but can I put in my app that I’m a first generation if my dad didn’t go to college? My mom went to college but in Colombia south America not the ivy league school which is spelled with a u.

You do not write that you are “first generation” anywhere on the application. You fill out the following information and they figure it out themselves.

^Taken from common ap form

PS So your mother’s education, even in Columbia, if she has a college degree would be included on the form.

I hope the idiot on NYC prep is rejected from Harvard. Wait, let me make that clear since the show is teeming with idiots: camille.

i know someone who works on the committee at harvard, 32 admission officers, if one doesnt like ur application then ur done

Does anyone know how harvard weeds out it’s applications? Is there a minimum gpa or sat that one needs to get to the next round of admissions? IMO I don’t think there is because you sometimes hear about ppl with 3.5 and 1800 who get in. Anyone who knows or has their own perspective please share

Only the hooked will get in with those kind of numbers. Think recruited athletes and developmentals.

@urbuddy542 Are you serious? Sounds kind of harsh to me. I thought it works on a loose democratic basis?

thts what u heard from an umndergrad who works in the admin council… also tips include ACT only is frowned upon they know its an easier test, and ppl with low stats are usually recruited athletes or they are just so special harvard needs one. One of my friend could get into harvard for football with a 27 act only… lol

urbuddy ^ What are you meaning by SAT only? Personally, that does not match our experience at all.

No personal offense intended, but I’m growing weary of parents talking about the college process/testing/grades as “OUR” application.

^ Of course it was not OUR application (I never used the word application!) but when I am the one on CC commenting about my observations/experience about last year’s application process “our” is an appropriate term. Saying MY experience sounds even more inappropriate and as for the opinion part is NOT my daughter who is making the statement so I cannot say it is hers. It is MY opinion that my daughter did not get accepted to Harvard based on her SAT score.

I was hoping to draw a response out of Urbuddy. When I parse his praising, I believe that, in addition to the opinion I have already stated, he may be misunderstanding a component Harvard’s application. I was hoping to learn more and correct the error if one existed.

@ urbuddy254: I’ve heard that before (how if one admissions officer doesn’t like your app, then you’re out), but I don’t think it’s true. According to Harvard, the final group votes on the applications and majority rules.

Here’s a link to an article that outlines Harvard’s admissions process, and talks about how they vote. (originally posted in the :please only answer…" thread that smoda61 suggested).
