Admissions qualification

I am a little confused. All over this forum, people post about how high the minimum qualifications are for potential freshman yet on the acutal UF website, they are actually a lot lower. Why is that?

Are you questioning the minimum qualifications to apply versus the credentials of those who actually get accepted?

In 2010, with 28,000 applications received and expecting to enroll in the 6,400 range, they accepted 11,000. Because they want a well-rounded and diverse population, many very qualified people end up getting rejected.

As I have noted before on CC, last year saw 29,469 applications of which 11,234 were admitted. Basing a yield calculation on 6,400 the actual class size was 6,500 spread out amoung Fall 2011, Spring 2012 and Summer B. Last year’s mean GPA according to UF was 4.30, SAT mean 1963 and ACT Composite mean 30. Estimated class size for this year is a maximum of 6300 and projected applications at about 33,000. This would result in an admission rate of about 34%. If you are a single deviation below the mean you have a small chance and anything below that would be a longshot.

^ That is the biggest load of bull **** I have heard. I just got done looking through the UF decision results from last year, and many people with an ACT under 30 were admitted. I saw 20’s, 22’s, and 23’s. Also, I saw many GPA’s belows 4.3 and they were also admitted. So, quite frankly, that’s not really true.

you would have to have a rudimentary understanding of statistics to understand why. there is not a defined functional relationship between certain stats and getting accepted–there is a great deal of variation at any given SAT score because there are other factors that come into play, and along side that a certain degree of error (you would expect at least).

with that in mind, i think it would be disingenuous to say that someone who has the same stats as someone else who was accepted 'aught to get in when they’re blow average. i’m not sure what criteria is better for where you can draw the line between ‘yes don’t be worried’ than the 50th percentile. in that case, its a bad idea to tell people with ACT’s of 20, 22 that they should have any expectation that they will get in. notice that in most cases, no one tells them flat out ‘no, you cannot get in’. thats not a reasonable statement, and is obviously false. you can say, however, that they are among the least likely to get in among students who are at least minimally qualified.

anecdotal evidence like seeing 20’s, 22’s, and so on is worthless is basically what i’m saying. it happens, but not reliably.

The figures I provided are correct. The fact that there are a relatively small number of very low SAT or ACT scores is attributable to one of two factors: Either, a “hook” for admission as an athletic scholarship admittee or one of the few admitted as a “Talented Twenty” admission, which guarantees admission to one of the state’s 4 year universities where regardless of the SAT or ACT score a top GPA within a high school (usually 3-5 people)is nominated by the school principal and receives an automatic admission. The term “mean” from a statistical interpretation standpoint does not preclude lower statistics just that the mean is a reflection of where the GPA and SAT/ACT scores are relative to the admitted class. Also there was a statistical spread between those admitted for Fall 2011 and those admitted for Summer B or Spring 2012, (assuming no request by the applicant for a term other that Fall) with the highest GPA and SAT/ACT for Fall, then Summer B and then Spring 2011.

Ok, so basically the minimum requirements they state in their website is for those that have a “hook” or are athletes? Otherwise unless you have a 4.0+ and a super high SAT/ACT score, you have no chance of being accepted? How about if you attend a community college and transfer during Junior year. Is it easier at that point?

^^yes to the second part of your question. Without a doubt easier to transfer in from a CC than to get into the freshman class. Average transfer stats are much lower and SAT and ACT don’t matter anymore.

you can get into UF without a GPA above 4.0. but not reliably. the stats on the website are fine.

In response to the post as to whether only a special “hook” such as an athletic scholarship
would permit admission at or slightly below the mean. generally yes, subject to those admitted under the “Talented Twenty” program . There are some 350-400 students who attend UF as freshman who are admitted to the entering class because of this program. When you add that number to athletic scholarship students it would suggest that the total number is in a range of 700-750 students, although there are a number of athletic scholarship admittees whose GPA’s and test scores are at or above the GPA and SAT/ACT mean. The projection is for 33,000 applications for 2012(last year 29,436) with about 6300 freshman slots. There will be additional slots for those that elect the Academy option, which means that you attend only in the Spring and Summer. In the Fall you can either work or take on-line courses or do something else. UF has stated that te admission criteria for the Academy will be the same as for applicants admitted for the regular program but that remains to be seen.Based upon 33,000 applications and somewhere around 11,000
admissions covering (Fall, Summer B and Spring 2013) the admission rate will be between 33-34%.

I got horrible grades in junior year, Ds Fs Cs and Bs because I had 20+ absences throughout the year due to various reasons(primary sickness) and also transferred schools in the middle so I lost focus.

But I retook the courses Ds and below, so will have 3 As, two Bs, Two Cs. I have 12 AP classes in total, and my weighted GPA on a scale where hon=5 and AP 6, Freshman=4.66, Sophomore= 5.01, Senior= 5.2+, Junior, Idk but it will be over 4.0 with the retaken courses. Considering I get a 2080-2150 SAT, and have wonderful extra curriculars and an amazing essay, can I still get into UF?

call admissions to ask about made up credits.

Uh, at my school, the average student who got into UF had a gpa of about a 4.2 and an SAT score of about a 1900. I’ve seen many students who got in with lower GPAs or SAT scores though

While the 2011 mean statistics for acceptance to UF of GPA of 4.30, ACT of 30 and SAT of 1963, that does not mean those numbers are an absolute cutoff or guarantee of admission. While numbers below the mean are not helpful there are applicants whose EC’s, awards or community service amplify their chances. Thus when people state that they got in with stats below the mean it is possible but one needs to consider that some other part of their application was exceptional or that they were awarded an athleic scholarship or were admitted through the “Talanted Twenty” program.
