I applied to RPI under regular decision, but am worried about whether or not I will be admitted. I'm a female going into computer science, and am from Chicago. I know that may mean something to the school, but I'm not sure how big of an influence it will be. I have a 3.7 weighted gpa and a 28 on my ACT.

Also, I read one of the forums about submitting recommendations. I sent 5. Am I screwed? They're not bad ones either. Three are from AP teachers (AP Computer Science, AP Calculus, and AP Latin), and the other two are from applied technology teachers. I did not read on their website that there was a restriction for recommendations and no one said it would hurt to send the ones I did.

Jesus, they only ask for 2. They have to read literally thousands of applications (last year over ten thousand), do you think they have time to spend 15 minutes each on 5 letters, then additional time on your own letter, then your application?

That part will probably **** them off

Your gpa is around their average, I'm not sure about your ACT because I've only been exposed to the SAT basically.

If you applied ED you most likely would have gotten in, I'm not sure about RD. You being a woman certainly helps

I doubt you need to worry about the number of recommendations. If the admissions officers are short on time, they could always just flat-out ignore a couple of them anyway. Ignoring something takes at most 2 seconds.

The 28 is probably a below average for RPI, but it really depends on how that 28 was composed. As far as I can tell, what really matters on that test is Math and Science scores.

Finally, don't stress too much! I know from experience that it's extremely hard not to think about it, but try to have some fun and enjoy yourself. Finally, make sure you understand GridWorld well :).

WOW. way to kick it off on a harsh start Josh! well first of all, 3.7 weighed is exactly what i got in with. youer a girl, and depending on the class load, i think you'll be off on a good start. O_o...

I think you have a fair chance... and maybe the number of recs will show how much you are interested in the school (not that they'll read all five)

I ended up with a 31 in math and a 29 in science. The reading section is what killed my score. Thanks to everyone who responded. I think I'll find out if I'm admitted in early March. :/

Try not to stress over it too much..the ACT score is a bit low, but your gpa is pretty good. As for the recommendations, it seems a little excessive, but I don't think that sending them will lower your chances of being admitted. Also, the fact that you're a female will be a plus for RPI.

Are you sure my ACT is considered a bit low for RPI? I read in several college guides that the ACT range is 25 to 29. I would think I would be on the higher end.

Sorry, it seems I was misinformed. I looked into it again and your ACT score is actually good for RPI. Anyway, you are in good shape for RPI, I sent in 4 and there was no problem.
