Admissions Review

My daughter received a form letter today requesting her 7th semester transcripts (they will be sent from her school-just came in mail-all A's) and her CFA (which was sent approx 10 days ago-and website stated last week that it was there-maybe crossed in US mail). Letter is dated 1/26/06..says they will complete the evaluation process after these are received. Does this seem normal? Medically, she qualified in summer. Received nom. from MOC in December. We are on pins and needles. Can anyone let me know if this is good-or what can we expect next? Someone told me the board only meets on Tuesdays. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I got a letter close to that. Once my file was complete, I had to redo something. I got a letter saying just get this in and they'll get back to me with a deciscion.

Did it just happen recently to you, too? Like I said, the only thing that could have happened was the crossing in the mail. I guess also, they could think that her 7th semester grades were complete weeks ago?? Thanks for the info.

I believe there is a "send a message to your admissions officer" option when you login (at least there used to be). She could send a brief message saying 7th semester grades were mailed on (date). You're right - the letter and the grades probably crossed in the mail. No telling when that form letter was actually put into motion - could have been several days before it was even postmarked on their end.

Our cadets' admissions officers were good about responding to email - their replies were brief, but it was very helpful during that "pins and needles" time.

Good luck to your daughter. The waiting is difficult, then you get to trade those worries to the concerns of Beast and Plebe Year. ;-) Enjoy these last months of her senior year - they are very special.

I got a letter dated 1/23 telling me I had to send in teacher evaluation forms. They told me forever (at least, I thought they did) that they were going to reuse my forms from last year, but they wanted my professors to fill them out too. They also told me not to fret, as getting it in later than usual wouldn't hurt my chances, and that I still had an excellent chance at admission.

You all may be reassured with a message our Senatorial Office just gave me. I called to find out about all nominations being sent in to the Academies by 1/31/06. Either by mail or electronically every Academy has received the nominations as of 2/3/06. In addition the Senator's staff told me that Appointments do not go out until February 2006. The waiting game really starts now, and in this time line the month of February is when appointments start to be given. Hang in there and be proud of your accomplishments.

Thanks for sharing that information. My son calls me every day after school to ask if anything came in the mail, as if I wouldn't let him know right away. :)

We are also in Virginia, and also waiting. Our son has received nominations from Senator Allen and Jo Ann Davis (rejected by Warner). In lieu of looking back through all the posts, do you mind if I ask if you have heard anything at all to date regarding your sons status?

Not at all. He recieved a presidential nomination and a congressional nomination from Davis. He recieved a letter in January saying he had been put on the national waiting list. I imagine if you aren't the primary nomination this is what happens as long as you have passed the cfa, physical and are qualified academically. The letter also asked that he be sure to send in his semester grades when available.

Has your son heard anything yet?

lizinva-
Do they always put you on the national waiting list AFTER receiving all the requirements, or do they put some on prior to file completion. In other words, would any one item in your file classify you for the NWL? Hope you can understand my question.
Nova-
Thank you for the well wishes for my daughter.

My concern: Our son got an LOA in November, passed all medical, CFA was good and have been waiting for the Senator to submitt his nomination- (just happened 1/31/06). With an LOA is he put on the National Waiting list? Or is it a green light when USMA completes all the paper work? How secure is his appointment process?

Read the letter again, it says all.

My son hasn't heard anything. He did speak with his AFA counselor today and was told that they (I believe in this order) start reviewing the regular admission files again this month and then the 2nd and 3rd weeks of March are when the regular selections are made (90% of them at this time). With regard to AFA that would make sense since I hear that mid-April is when kids start hearing about rejection, etc.

I'm a little stumped by the NWL. I've heard different things about why kids are placed there and I'm now wondering if it's a bad thing that my son hasn't even been placed on that. He did just finish his application process to West Point late last month (except for the interview--they haven't called yet) -- so maybe I'm jumping the gun here. Any thoughts?

jakesmom - I believe your post stated it all by saying his application package was completed late last month (assuming January?). The Admissions Board has been meeting regularly since September, so he is behind the curve. Not necessarily a bad thing, if he has a competitive file and if there are no medical issues to resolve. Files have to be complete by February 28 so he should contact his MALO or Admissions Officer to inquire about the interview (may be optional) so he has all of his bases covered prior to the end of the month.

It's not a 100% guarantee. But reading this board over the past couple of years, I only recall one LOA being rescinded based on paperwork submitted. So consider it, say, a 98% guarantee. You should hear in the next week. Good luck.

Jakesmom -

Folders can go through multiple reviews before a candidate is deemed "qualified". The standard is not an absolute one, but varies a bit over time based on the strength of the other applicants. In addition, each piece of information submitted about a candidate changes his overall score - so if your son has any updates (awards, leadership positions, etc) it would be wise to update now.

If he's determined to be qualified and has a nom (but not the primary nom or the top file in the district) he'll be put on the NWL, then be considered against others on that list. Good luck to you as well.

Rockymnt, with an loa you have nothing to worry about. You should be hearing very soon. Congratulations on your loa.

Jakesmom, Once his file is complete and he is qualified he would probably be put on the list unless he has a primary nomination and then I believe he would get an appointment.

Reed, I think your file has to be complete before you get put on the waiting list. They will send you a letter letting you know the status. Good luck.

Thank you to all that have replied. My sons AFA & USNA files have been complete for a couple of months. His West Point file lagged behind a bit because of having to resubmit a teacher eval. form. We've heard he is a strong candidate for all, but we know he is not in the top tier (loa-type), GPA isn't way up there. He has noms to all three and two each to AFA & West Point (including presidentials) so at least that should give him an additional chance. In the meantime, he continues to update his files and fill out other applications at colleges where he is being recruited for football.

Good luck to everyone! The best thing about lurking on this site is sharing the excitement, joys and concerns everyone has. And being retired military you tend to miss that comraderie that was part of our everyday life -- something I truly think that those of you who enter military life will cherish forever. My prayers are with you all!
