Hi Im just wondering about the select candidate applications that colleges send out: are they legit? I got ones from Worcester Polytech and Hofstra, and I applied using them simply because they were free. My question is whether these students really do get advanced notification of admission and special consideration for scholarship, or are schools just trying to look better by getting their application numbers up?

Usually more towards the latter, though it varies from school to school. Something like Tulane gives that to everyone who has a pulse.

Well it's probably a perfectly legitimate application, you would get notification earlier and maybe have the fee waived. But it was sent in order to increase the raw number of applications. It's not really a scam- more of a ploy.

I believe the University of Vermont has something similar.

Not a scam. They want to attract your attn (which it has) and hopefully get themselves on your radar. Nice hooks like early notification and perhaps some sweeter FA or scholarships -- sounds like savvy marketing to me. They get what they want (good students) and you get an enjoyable college experience.

Proceed if the school looks like a good match for you. Remember, many schools need to "court" potential students.

Yea, that's what I thought it was
