Admissions Staff?

Hi! I’m applying ED to Brown from North Carolina. I was wondering if contacting my admissions officer would be a smart move to introduce myself, and kind of “preface” my application. I’m just worried that the admissions office might see me as a try-hard or someone trying to kiss up. (Although, I don’t see being a try-hard as a bad thing!)

Contact him/her and do what??? Exchange pleasantries? Rehash what’s already written in your application?

If you have an important question/issue that is not addressed by the school’s website or literature, then definitely contact your admissions rep. Otherwise, don’t annoy these people. They have literally THOUSANDS of applicants they have to process.

Agreed with above poster. Do not contact admissions unless you have something very specific to discuss. Your application should speak for itself.

Have you made an official visit to Brown? That is the best way to show interest, other than the ED application itself.

I agree you should not make a contact just to rehash what’s on your application or to shoot the breeze. But I would email the admission officer who represents NC and ask if she/he has any plans to travel to your school or city this Fall. This is a legit question likely not available on their website and also useful. If rep is in the area you should meet her/him. Sometimes an interview can be done.

Also, no matter how great your stats, I guess you know that getting into an Ivy is a reach, so hope you have a good list of matches and safeties. Good luck!

The information about visits from regional admissions officers is available here: https://www.brown.edu/admission/undergraduate/visit/brown-near-you?states_and_territories=All&field_info_session_country_ref_nid=638
Nothing listed for North Carolina as of now.

I agree with what everyone is saying on this thread. Feel free to jump on the ED Brown thread that’s atop the Brown University forum! Good luck!

Thanks for your answers! I’ve been told to contact my admissions officers at my matches and safeties, and those have generally gone well. I know admissions to Ivies are in their own league, so I don’t want to annoy the rep. I did a self guided tour of Brown last week while I was visiting a friend in RI. I have been on the campus, but I don’t think the school would have a record of it.

I would contact her to say you visited and that you liked the campus, that you’re looking forward to applying etc. According to my GC, having some contact with them can definitely help show interest if they’re wondering whether you would go (matters more at less selective schools than at brown).

Agree with ^^^ that interest matters more at less select schools but Brown may still track interest. Agree also with one short email about visiting Brown and get on their email list. Then you don’t appear as a stealth candidate (which is usually only a problem when students send out multiple apps to schools that have never heard from them and doubt students would come if accepted. Your ED is the big show of interest).
