I was just curious if anybody knew how many applicants applied, and how many were accepted. If you don't know for sure, maybe you could estimate. I am trying to figure out by what %age applicants increased this year so we could better determine the effect on the acceptance rate.

I believe 25,000 applied this year. Given Northwestern typically has a 40% or so yield, and that yield will likely be lower this year with the advent of the common app and the increasing trend of students applying to 10+ schools, i'd imagine they accepted around 5,800 students, give or take 300, for an acceptance rate of around 23%.

I'd argue yield will be higher this year. Common app was implemented last year, and people applying to 10+ is more likely to help NU than hurt. I'd say admit rate is likely to be closer to 21%.

I'm going to split the diff. and say 22%.

It really wouldn't surprise me if it broke into the teens.

I'm guessing the official figure will be reported next week by The Daily once classes resume.

any update yet on the admissions stats?

Seems as though the applicant pool was up 14%. So probably looking at ~19% admit rate.
~4800 are admitted out of 25000 applicants this year.

Northwestern admitted 8 percent more applicants for the Class of 2012 6,327 than for last year, officials said Monday, as part of a record-setting class with the greatest number of applicants and highest SAT scores in university history.

A record 25,027 students applied to Northwestern for the coming fall, making for a 25.3 percent acceptance rate, according to Associate Provost Michael Mills. The mean SAT score of the prospective students was a record 1468, out of 1600, while 91.8 percent of those admitted are in the top 10 percent in their class.

Last year, 21,941 students applied and 27 percent were admitted.

Well, there we have it. #Admitted was up 8% over last year, while percentage of applicants admitted still fell 2%. Perhaps this was a play to increase yield?

25%, it should be noted, is still a solid and respectable number.

Link, please.

Nevermind, found it by quoting a whole sentence on Google.

What was the early decision admission rate, and what % of the class is filled by the early decision candidates? Thanks.

this is an indication that nu is expecting to share a record number of cross-admits with other top schools including hypms. they are anticipating a record low yield (2025/6327=32%)

pizzagirl,

ED admit rate was 37%. NU typically fills 1/4 of its class with EDers

Thanks, Sam Lee.

The graphics from North by Northwestern are really simple and straightforward. Thanks for the link, arbiter213. Makes me realize how lucky my son was to be accepted to NU.

neumes-
Your son was lucky - in the most positive sense.
If he goes to NU, I have no doubt that he will love it.
My daughter is over the moon about NU. She says there's not a school she saw that she'd rather be at...and she saw a lot of schools!

25% wow I thought it would be lower

They accepted more people than last year, but the admit rate still went down because there were many more applicants.

If they only accepted the same amount as last year, the rate would be in the low twenties at most.
