So, have you ever had the experience in which you knew someone who got admitted into a top university, yet in your perspective, did not seem to have the top caliber credentials needed for admission? Was there someone at your school who was so enthusiastic upon application time, someone that you doubted would gain acceptance, but later proved you wrong and left you speechless? Tell your stories here.

There was this girl I knew last year who applied to Yale early. All the administrators, all the teachers, EVERYONE thought she was going to get in. She got deferred. She ended up at Princeton.

Same thing with a family friend the year before. He was amazing at life. Deferred from MIT, ended up at Princeton.

ED decisions just came in from UVA. I know a couple people who applied.
This girl I know got in.
I know her. I read her essays. I've watched her cheat on every assignment and test over the last four years.
Her essays were absolute crap. Poor grammar, bad topics, the works.
I can't believe she got in. I'm not sure whether I should be glad (now I KNOW I'm in! :p) or furious.

I only hope they catch her cheating and expel her.

My friend got into Duke and he was in no clubs, partied all the time his whole junior/senior year, but totally owned the SAT. He decided to go elsewhere, though..

Oh, our starting quarterback was offered a full ride to Duke.
he's a junior.
with a 3.something. 3.2, MAYBE.

great topic seriously

I don't have any to share yet, but I know there'll be some regarding this one girl that will make me furious. Her grammar and writing suck like hell, and her parents spend a lot of money on tutoring for her, for her AP classes and for SAT prep classes. And I mean it when I say she receives a lot of extra help. It's just annoying. I was told that during 8th grade, her mom wrote a letter to get her into English Honors. Come on. Okay, I'm just especially miffed because she is one of the most annoying, hypocritical, and manipulative people I know.

Sorry for turning this into a rant. To make this more related to the topic, I know she'll get accepted into some good schools because I could safely assume that she received a lot of help regarding her personal statement essays, and she has held top leadership positions in several extracurriculars (even though I know she barely does anything).

that kills me, deadgiveaway. I hate stuff like that. a lot.

I have a friend who got into MIT but can't expand sin(2theta) or use the chain rule. She took multivariable calculus in high school and got a 3 on the Calc BC. Her SATs were ~1400/1600, she had poor grades, and several of her teachers didn't like her.

BUT when she actually came to MIT, her research was incredible, and when she applied for grad school, one of the schools to which she applied said she was the best applicant in the year. Go figure. (her college GPA did suck though)

some girl: 3.03 GPA and 930/1600 SAT's........ will be going to NYU LOL

930....?

.....

!!!!!!

I'm not surprised. She is probably a URM.

URM or not, that really ticks me off. I'm ardently against affirmative action.

nope she is WHITE! and a 1460/2400 LOLLLLLLLLLLL

how is that?

she applied to the dentistry program. don't know how much that would change things, but still a 930/1460

if everything else was strong it can be overlooked... i know its obscenely low but still

she wasn't a strong applicant. she had no ap's and only a few honors classes and played two sports thats it lol

i sure hope i never have her as a dentist.
