I have sent off a weak application to a highly selective school that I really want to get into (I had discovered it late). Is there anything I can do to improve my chances? Would it be an insane/awful idea to send in an updated, finely crafted essay or a brief video? If there is anything I can do post-application to improve my chances, I'm for it, but I'm very afraid such an uncalled-for submission would be detrimental.

Your guess is correct. A video (ala Legally Blonde) is just straw grasping. No college is going to view it.
