I make Admissions videos for colleges and I'm curious - what do you think is the most effective way to convey what a college is like? I see so many videos that all look the same to me. I'd like to think the videos I make are different and more effective ... but then again I'm partial. :-)

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Any links they could share to college videos they like or find effective?

Can anyone tell me what they'd like to see in a college video?

C’mon folks - has anyone seen any videos they like on a college website? I’m trying to find out what high school students find helpful in an admissions video. Reply here with the university name or paste in a URL to something you like and, more importantly, is helpful to you in trying to choose a college or university. Thanks!

As an incoming senior who doesnt have the time or $ to visit every prospective college, I appreciate videos that

*cover a lot. Quick, sweeping shots of campus arent particularly helpful. I think that videos should highlight the big points of campus: classrooms, cafeteria, dorms, etc.

*arent just narrated by a voice-over. I want to hear from the students and professors, not a script.

*give an idea of the schools philosophy, overall academic program, and best opportunities (i.e. internships, study abroad.)

A good, if a little over-dramatic, example:

Hope this helps. :)

Since you make college admission videos perhaps you can post links to some of them. This would make it easier to comment on what others find helpful.

I saw a UMich commercial that had a remix of their school song. Good stuff. Somewhat inspiring. You should check that out (actually, I tried looking it up on the internet, couldn’t find it).

Anyways, at the end of your videos, I definitely recommend doing the school song, but not in the standard brass. Do it electronically, and show some really inspiring short shots while it plays.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! A lot of the college videos I see seem very much the same - lots of quick cuts, fast paced, lots of very quick interviews. They tend to blur together to me and I can’t tell one school from another.

I have been experimenting with doing “day in the life” videos of students and faculty so you get to meet someone on campus and experience life at a university through their eyes. If you want to check some out, please go to this live site -

I know you are busy, and I really do appreciate any feedback you can give me. I want to do the best job I can at showing what a university is like, and getting feedback from students who are actually trying to choose a school is the best input I can receive, so thanks!
