<p>We are going to be visiting the school in April of 2009, and as I live in California, I have a very vague idea of what to expect. I recently heard about the school from a family friend, and he said that while we are on our trip to the east coast, we should definitely stop by. I have just a couple of questions about the school, but the location itself looks great, and obviously the aerial images of the school only accentuate its desireability. So here are my questions:
1. Is the school highly selective, and out of curiousity, what kinds of extracurriculars were you, current students, involved in during high school? (and no, I'm not trying to copy your EC's, I just want to get an idea of the kind of applicant CC looks for.)
2. I am a girl and I noticed the fact that the boy-girl ratio is rather unbalanced...lol...do you feel that socializing with the Coast Guard Guys is easy or difficult?
3. Does it seem like very many people from the West Coast attend the school?</p>
<p>ths - will bite, only because no one else has yet. Am certainly no expert on Conn College, though am quite familiar with the area, have been to the campus several times, and know of several students who are very happy there. It is pretty high up on S2's mental list, though cost may be an issue for us...</p>
<p>First impression-- we definitely picked up a rather preppy vibe there. Am sure some may differ, but the student body seemed somewhat more homogenous than some of the other schools we visited (though not necessarily more so than other east coast LACs). That said, the students we know of who attend (two are girls) seem extremely happy there, gush about the friends they've made, and feel they're getting a good education. Didn't ask about mingling with the Coast Guard academy, though! </p>
<p>Our most recent visit was last spring, and the campus was absolutely beautiful. Not large, but as pretty as any we've seen. New London is not exactly fun city, and parts of it are somewhat depressed, but Mystic and Long Island Sound are close by. Am not a fan of casinos, but Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun are pretty close, and both offer shopping and concert venues. Long Island is just a ferry ride away, with walk-ons readily available. I'd be curious to know if the college ever offers bus trips to Boston or NY. </p>
<p>There are a lot of New England and NY students there. Would guess that being from outside the area might be a plus. You could probably find state-by-state statistics somewhere on their website.</p>
<p>As the poster above me said, I would check the Conn Coll website for information about where current students come from. Schools love to brag about how geographically diverse their students are, so the site should include something about it. You might also want to check Conn groups on Facebook, especially newly accepted student groups where everyone introduces themselves and says where they're from and what their interests are. </p>
<p>To address your first question, Conn is a selective school; according to "The Big Book of Colleges '09", compiled by College *******, the acceptance rate is 35%. Again, the Conn website should offer information concerning admissions statistics.</p>
<p>Thanks for the replies...wow, hardly anyone updates the Conn College threads. Yea, I've checked the website for state-by-state stats, but they really only seem to have the usual admission statistics (i.e. class size, ethnicity, etc.) I'll go ahead and check out the groups on facebook as well.</p>
