Admissions

I want to apply to a boarding school for 10th grade, but I'm not sure which ones I am realistically able to get into.

I have mostly A's, only B's were 6th and 7th, and once each semester in eighth grade year, but that was because I was taking AlgIITrig in middle school.

I am fluent in English and Korean, getting there in Spanish and Chinese.
I have debated for 3 years now, and I'll be looking to go to nationals this year as a freshman.
I swim competitively, I'm decent but not like an Olymic trialist by any means.
This summer I participated in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Program.

For community service, I will be volunteering in orphanages with my church.
I haven't taken the SSAT yet, but I think I'll do well, as I have taken the SAT in early 8th grade and got a mid 1900's score. I took the ISEE last year and got 99's in all except 1, and I got a 98 in that one.

Which schools do you think I should apply to? I am strongly considering Loomis Chaffee, Milton, Exeter, Deerfield, Choate, and Mercersburg, and maybe Kent as well.

Thanks!

Oh, I’ve looked at some more, and I was wondering if there is a better chance at Lawrenceville or Hotchkiss?

Try this:
[Sort Boarding Schools by Key Criteria | BoardingSchoolReview.com](Sort Boarding Schools by Key Criteria)

You can sort the schools by admission rate, and by other criteria

Acceptance rate for Lawrenceville = Exeter = Choate > Hotchkiss, but some kids who get into Hotchkiss get rejected from Exeter. The best you can do is apply to a wide range of schools (top tiered or not) and hope for at least one fat letter.

Actually I believe that Hotchkiss’ acceptance rate is lower than lawrenceville’s, although both are extremely low.

Unless my eyes are fooling me, I used a “greater than” sign (>) to indicate that Lawrenceville’s acceptance rate is higher than that of Hotchkiss…

My point is that, when two schools both have ability to reject >4/5 of their applicants, a couple of % difference in acceptance rate is not going to make one necessarily more or less selective than the other. If you have the stats and if the schools see you as a good fit/addition to their student (and it’s entirely up for the schools to decide whether or not you’re a good fit), they will accept you!

And since fit is erratic anyway, apply to as many schools as you could bear to do and hope for the best.

Jumping out of an airplane using a parachute w an 18% chance of opening, is pretty much the same thing as jumping out of an airplane using a parachute w an 22% chance of opening…

Yes, and the only time that a discrepancy of 5-10% proves significant is when two schools possess radically different pools, one of which is somehow more statistically competitive than the other. So say, the Governor’s Academy has an acceptance rate of 22%, but its admission, in my opinion, is more lenient than that of Taft (which has about the same rate) because kids applying to Taft tend to have better academic/extracurricular credentials, making Taft necessarily more selective for those who don’t have adequately competitive stats.

Because Lawrenceville, Andover, Choate, Hotchkiss, and, to a lesser extent, Loomis tend to have overlapping applicant pools (all are in the 10 Schools) , the nominal difference in acceptance rates is not going to be a decisive factor in telling you whether “there is a better chance at Lawrenceville or Hotchkiss”. However, I would say that Andover and Exeter’s applicant pools are even more self-selected than their peers (it’s not uncommon to see people that refuse to apply to anywhere but Exover, which is a rather foolish choice of theirs).

And the vagaries of prep school admissions get even more haphazard if you need financial aid. . .

Yes, I was mistaken about the “>” sign (who wouldve thought I’m actually good at math? haha) I figured that Exeter’s acceptance rate is lower than Hotchkiss’ but after further research I see that it’s not. My bad.

But, as others have said, the difference is inconsequential. Just because there is a 2% difference in the rates does not really mean that your chances would be “better”. Both are exceptional, highly selective schools.

Bump__________

Have you visited the schools? A visit will pretty much tell you which ones you want to apply to and which ones you don’t.

DS cut 2 from his list after visiting them. Conversely, a school that was low on his list before the visits, shot up to #1 after the visits.

Yes, I really like Loomis and Hotchkiss, but I’m not sure if I would be able to be accepted…

No one is really sure they will be accepted by any school they apply to. That’s why people apply to multiple schools.

If you like the school, then why not try? If you don’t apply, your chances are zero.

Thanks, I will.

What are the chances, by the way?
BSR says that the acceptance rate for Loomis is around 29 percent, but not sure if it’s outdated or not…

Admit rate will vary slightly from year to year, but it’ll be in the ballpark. BSR has fairly good data. You can double check directly w schools’ websites.

Loomis, Lville, Choate admit rate in the 20’s; Hotchkiss & Exeter in the teens. All are difficult to get into.

Oh, and I got a 97 percentile in the SSAT.

95 Reading
99 Math
92 Verbal

The ssat scores are just one very small piece of the puzzle. COncentrate on the rest of what you have to offer because ssat scores will not be the deciding factor unless they are terrible and they will disqualify you.

you seem like a good applicant! mind chancing me?

I made a post, by the way. it’s Chance me for BS?
