Does anyone know if being from out of state hurts your chance of acceptance? Thanks

I’m from MA as well (top 15 ranked according to Boston magazine), average accepted for my school is 3.3 and a 1600. That’s pretty low for OSU, but applicants are 4/25 applied to admitted. I think it’s the same in state and out of state, however it depends on how good your high school is too.

The average from my school (I’m from andover) is a 3.98 and 1920 so I’m a little stressed out. There’s also around 20 people from my school who are applying so that adds to my stress. Your school made me feel a little better though so thanks

no problem.

emilyfromma and sbelamarich - my daughter (from Mass) is also applying to OSU. Its nice to hear that so many students are applying. I’m curious as to why there appears to be this uptick in interest in the school from Mass. students. What attracted the two of you to apply there?

Well, for a few reasons. The brand has changed dramatically, Ohio state isn’t just a run of the mill state school anymore. There business school has high marks. I would say I consider sports in my college choice (probably shouldn’t), so a school that has great academic prestige and great sports is a huge plus. Also, there are so many alumni I feel confident I could get a job after college in the Boston area. The big ten (B1G) has large alumni numbers in the northeast which helps with networking. One of my best friends parent’s both went pre-med at ohio state, so they’ve recommended it to me as well. I think that speaks to the alumni in the area.
Also, personally I like large schools and Umass-amherst just doesn’t appeal to me. No offense to anyone that wants to go there, just didn’t click with me. As a parent you are probably wondering why a kid might want to go all the way to Ohio for a state school. Hopefully your daughter qualifies for the national buckeye scholarship. She could go to tOSU for the same price as Umass.

I too want the big school feel. The reason I’m so interested in OSU is because it has everything I am looking for. I want a huge school with huge sports, not too much Greek life, and smart students. I’ve toured 23 schools and my other top choices are uconn and Villanova. I loved udel but the sat scores are much lower than mine and I didn’t wanna be surrounded by people that only care about partying. I hated umass Amherst so much when I toured it. I have not even toured osu but I consider it in my top. I swear I’ve looked up every little thing about it and read thousands of reviews about everything about it. If I get in I will be touring it asap. What towns are you guys from? There’s so many more people in my school applying to osu this year compared to other years and I don’t know why. I really really wanna get in though.

Well, its sounds like both of you have similar thoughts as my daughter. She too wants a big school, big time sports (nothing wrong with that), strong academics, strong recruitment from East Coast companies. and the National buckeye scholarship is a nice bonus. UMass also isn’t one of her top choices.

I have no qualms about her applying anywhere in the US. My oldest daughter is at Virginia Tech (another big school with excellent academics), so distance isn’t an issue for our family.

Good luck to both of you. Judging from your ability to communicate in your posts, you both have bright futures ahead of you.

I’m from Brookline, there are only 6 people applying from my school of 470 seniors, not sure if that number is complete yet. The Ohio State bug hasn’t hit yet. Lots of people applying to Michigan though.
From what my friend has told me (he’s visited Columbus multiple times), that Columbus is pretty nice too. Personally Didn’t like the feel amherst of amherst. I feel like the kids who go there just go there because it’s affordable and close. Nothing wrong with affordability, just nothing special about the school.
Also, Thanks Bennie! Good luck to you daughter as well.

There’s 20 people out of 450 at my school who are applying which isn’t too high of a number. Not too many from my school are applying to Michigan though. Good luck! Maybe we’ll both see each other next year haha! Let me know if you get in!

Good luck everyone !
