Ok so I spoke with my guidance counselor on Friday he told me to apply to Suny’s and CUNY’s and only 2 two years. I’ve done research on majors and i think I want to major in cs. But I did fail a semester of geometry and algebra 1. But got an a in algebra 2 and a a plus this term. I am taking ap stats next year. So can I apply as a computer science major? Anyways here is my college list. If someone can chance me that would be great.
Suny’s: brockport ub fredonia Oswego Potsdam
CUNY’s: college of Staten Island hunter queens college and city college
Suny 2 years: Monroe and Adirondack
Thank you
My weighted gpa is a 84 and my unweighted is a 82. My sat is a 1100. I played varsity tennis soccer cross country and track and have over 1000 service hours.
Your own guidance counselor is the person best able to predict your chances of admission because they know who from your high school has been admitted where in recent years.
My bigger concern would be that you have failed two math classes in the past. Did you retake them? Have you changed your study habits so that you won’t have that kind of problem again in the future?
I failed the semester but passed both classes for the overall year.
Can someone please chance me on these schools my gpa is 84 w 82 uw 1100 sat.
Have you considered Information Technology instead of computer science?
@NJCity i found a love for math junior year and want to major in computer science.
@happymomof1 I go to a school that has 5000 students it was a blessing that I got to have a 5 minute conference call with her and she told me basically to do research on my own. So that’s why I care here. My school has one college counselor for 5000 students it’s pretty crazy. I try to go her office all the time and end up getting verbally abused by her staff because they said I’m to obsessive which is kind of messed up because I’m autistic and we are very obsessive over certain things so I’ve been going through this process all via the internet.
Sorry to hear that your counselor didn’t help much. Considering you’re looking to major in CS, colleges will most likely take into account your failed semesters of Alg 1 & Geometry, since math classes are a big aspect of CS. I’m not an expert, but I can say for those CUNYs at least you should be fine with your GPA & SAT scores. Continue to work hard senior year since they will still be looking at your scores then.
@sybbie719 is one of our NYS experts, so I hope she checks in. If she does, she will have good ideas for you.
Have you spoken with your parents about the costs of college? Be sure to do that. While everyone is on lockdown right now could be a good time to run the Net Price Calculators at the college and university websites so you can get an idea of what you might expect to have to pay.
@happymomof1 my parents are on board to pay if I go to a Suny or CUNY are net price ranges between 8,000 to 13,000 which we can afford and I do qualify for excelsior and will be applying for that
What is the break down of your SAT scores (EBRW / Math)
What are your regents scores in Math & ELA
If you are not SEEK/EOP Eligible CUNY: City/Hunter and Queens are going to be reaches.
I see that you are a student with a disability. Have you tried having a conversation with your school’s transition coordinator. If you have an IEP, you have a transition plan. Your transition coordinator should be helping your with stuff like ACCES-VR, if you have told him/her what your plan is, s/he can also give you advice on achieving your plan
does your school have a college counselor?
@sybbie719 i got a 75 on the Algebra and geometry regents and a 80 on the English regents. I got a 550 split on the sat. I spoke with queens admission counselor and he said I meet requirements and I spoke with students that go there and they said I have a very likely chance of getting in.
@sybbie719 on reddit I posted the same list on reddit and a lot of people said that I have a good shot at every school except ub which is a reach
I promise I have been doing college at the NYC DOE longer than some of your reddit people have been alive. Unless you are SEEK Eligible, you are not a lock for City/Hunter & Queens (they are not allowed to tell you over the phone that you are not eligible)
You are slightly above the college readiness metrics for CUNY (70 in math and 75 in ELA) SAT (480/ELA and 530 Math)

I did not even look at your SUNY Schools; yes, I would give you the nod at Fredonia, Potsdam. Oswego for computer science may be a stretch, UB is definitely a reach
start here
https://www.cuny.edu/admissions/undergraduate/apply/academic-profiles/
google SUNY Freshman Profiles to see where you fall
@sybbie719 Where does a 82 unweighted 84 weighted fall on the sunys 4.0 scale so I can check the common data sets.
@sybbie719 what about Plattsburgh and brockport?
Are you sure queens is a reach? @sybbie719 there common data set says they except over 20 percent of people with a 2.5-2.9 same thing with Oswego
82/84 is not a solid 3.0 you would fall ~2.9 85-87 is a B
You do realize that this statement means that they **do not accept 80 percent ** of the candidates in this gpa range.
because it opens as a pDF, google
Admissions Info-StateOp - SUNY
so that you can get the tables
@sybbie719 but that’s a pretty significant chunk I was told during my guidance counselor the one meeting we had that anything over 15 percent means they accept a lot of that type of student. And what about brockport csi and Plattsburgh? Do you have any recommendations on what other schools to look at?
