Admissions

are there alot of people who got into other UCs going to cal poly?

I got into UCR, UCSC, UCI, UCSB, and UCSD and im going to Cal Poly…

My son got into UCI, UCR, UCSB as well as SDSU and the Univ of Colorado, Boulder with a $15K scholarship and he’s going to Cal Poly.

wow gotpeter…congrats to your son on getting $15k/year scholarship. Must have been a tough decision for him. I’m sure he’ll love it at Cal Poly.

I was admitted to UCSB and UCSC and I’m going to Cal Poly

Thanks slodad. Actually when you add up the out of state tuition and the cost of travel its not such a good deal but it was quite flattering to get it. Regardless, what tipped the decision for my son was researching the schools reputation in his desired major, talking to dozens of students and graduates, not one of which had a bad thing to say about Cal Poly, and his visits to the school which included tours of the campus, engineering and the dorms.
(This forum, with contributions from people such as yourself, was and continues to be a huge help.)

Oh, and the fact that the school is close to the ocean - he’s an avid kite surfer - didn’t hurt either :)

@gotpeter…Yes OOS costs at CU Boulder are steep. But I’m sure it feels good to be wanted! My son got $4k/yr at U of Oregon but decided to stay here in SLO. YAY!

The kite surfing season has started at Pismo I think. Has he ever ridden there? It looks like a lot of fun but my 50+ year old body wouldn’t be able to handle it (the inevitable crashes) I think.

Yes, the season begins in March and he rode it last year when we visited Cal Poly. Actually the best place to go is Oceano Beach the next beach down from Pismo. You can drive right on the beach! We had a blast. There are also incredible sand dunes there.
Believe it or not there are a lot of 50+ folks kiting at 3rd Ave. in San Mateo. My son is now an instructor and finds them to be the best students by far.

I live in SLO so I may have to hook up with him then. There is a guy that teaches out there already. [California Kiteboarding - Kiteboarding California Photos, Lessons, Events - Pismo Beach Morro Bay San Luis Obispo Grover Beach Oceano](http://www.californiakiteboarding.biz/index2.php?page=home) Do you think your son will get in touch with him or just teach on his own. I wakeboard so I am used to being on top of the water but dealing with the wind will be a totally different story!!
I’ve seen some nasty spills on YouTube.

Oh and be careful if you are riding the dunes in an ATV or such…every year someone gets killed or seriously injured!

That we don’t do but, they are impressive.

I chose Cal Poly over UCD, UCI and UCSB after seriously considering Davis and Santa Barbara. I visited SLO, went to some classes at the School of Business and really liked everything about the campus and the town.

What did you like about the classes at the Business School? My son will also be a business major.

The building is new and gorgeous. Every student I met loved the program and they were from different concentrations. Students were also minoring in lots of different (non business) areas. Most of the classes seemed small to medium sized. No one had anything negative to say! It also helped to read that the program is nationally recognized.

Wow good to know! Thanks!

I got into UCSB and UCSC and I choose Calpoly. Why? The town for one is amazing. The campus is worthwhile, and you are getting a better education in general and for the value.
