Admissions??????

I am a junior at a public school in Tennessee. I would like to know my chances of getting into Georgia Tech for business, but will also complete the requirements for medical school.

Stats:
GPA: 3.95 unweighted
Top 10% of my class.
ACT: 26 (just recently got a 30 on practice test)

About 15 Honors classes and will have 4 APs by the end of my Senior year (my school only offers 6)-A's in all AP

ECs:
-Volunteering at Hospital in the summer
-Work part time at Chick-fil-A
-Attended National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine at UCLA
-Will Attend TN Govenor's School for International Studies and willl take class in Macroeconomics.
-International DECA Competitor for creating a business
-Lettered in Band, Bowling, Football
-Writer for School Paper
-Member of Mock Trial for 3 yrs.
-Battle of Bands charity event for INTERACT
-Member of NHS
-Member of BETA
-Member of DECA and FBLA
-Received the Billy Mitchell Award in Civil Air Patrol and was the Cadet Commander of my local squadron. (equivalent of an Eagle Scout)

I am sure there are others...these are the ones I can remember.

Please be honest and tell me what I need to work on...I know the ACT needs improvements, but anything else would help.

You are fine. I would say you would probably be admitted even with your ACT score, but I would definitely take it again and try to get it up. You may also want to try taking the SAT as some people score more highly on one than the other. Other than that, just keep up what you are already doing.

GPA is great, but that ACT is really low.

If you can retake the ACT and get a 30, or really a 28 or better, you’ll almost certainly get in, but with the current ACT, it’s not clear.

thanks…anyone else???

Someone in the admitted thread got in with the same GPA and an 1880 SAT. Since he just posted, I assume he came off the Wait List, so I wouldn’t bet on a score below that. That means you need roughly a 28 ACT.

do you have any hooks?

well… idk but I just got accepted with a GPA of 96/100 and a SAT score of 1870 and I’m international but I applied for electrical engineering. You can apply just to see what happens! good luck!

no I dont have any hooks…do I need them for GT???

Honestly, apply as a management major is enough of a hook. Very few students apply for that program (90%-95% of the management graduates are people who either failed out of engineering or are athletes).

I guess it’s a sign that the school is getting better (recently jumped to #22 and the top school in the state, past Emory).

College of Architecture 1215 1340 1330
College of Engineering 1289 1370 1360
College of Science 1250 1365 1360
College of Computing 1390 1380 1380
College of Management 1110 1320 1280
College of Ivan Allen 1230 1350 1320

Note football players tend to enroll in the summer semester. For fall semester, management major is -20 against Architecture, -50 against engineering, -45 against Science, -60 against computing, -30 against Liberal art school.

Obviously it was an exaggeration (though people on campus tend to feel that way - just watch the M-Train video).

The MGT department graduates 350 students / yr according to that link, and they in-take 120 freshman / yr. So about 2/3 of MGT majors started as something else. And that doesn’t include the large number of students that come to Tech as business majors then switch in their first semester (like my wife).

http://www.irp.gatech.edu/apps/factbook/?page=59</a></p>

So would you even recommend going to GT for business??? I would like to complete the pre req. for medical school as well. I dont want to be the laughing stock on campus and be in B.S. classes with football players…

First of all, Tech is primarily engineering school and it has no easy major like Philosphy or Communication, so most college athletes tend to major either HTS (History Technology Science, i.e English) or Management.

Second of all, College of management is legit school. It ranked No. 35 undergraduate by USNews and just rated No. 22 in MBA in the country by USNews. It also has brand new state of art facility that just opened five years ago called Tech Square. It has hosted seminar by former GE Jack Welsh and CNBC show Mad Money.

Third, Most engineering/CS school are ranked top five in the country. So by comparsion, management major is weaker (only ranked 35 and 22 respectively). However, Tech management program is close ranked with UGA Terry school of business, the arguable the best and most competitive school in UGA. At Terry school of business, UGA undergraduate has to take entry exam (Accounting major has to take two exams) just to make to the program.

Fourth, I found most engineering/CS major at Tech tend to complain a lot about their life (long hours of study, shaft by professor, gender inbalance) and at the same times make fun of everybody else who don’t look like them (UGA, management major, athletes). Also, if you worry about people making fun of you, you probably don’t want to major Industrial Engineering (i.e imaginary engineering) either even though IE at tech ranked No. 1 in the country.

Fifth, I don’t think declaring major in management (or HTS) is a hook because I believe Tech admission officer require same requirement for all students regardless of major. As they put, you may change major later on. You may want to check Tech admission office on that.

Thanks Jim!!!

Hey Jim1980…what do you think my chances are???

bummmmmp…

I came in as a Management major, and I’m happy with my choice. The professors are dedicated to their research and teaching. They are very approachable and happy to answer your questions.

You can be a Management major and complete the pre-med track. In fact, the College recently [profiled one such student](http://mgt.gatech.edu/news_room/news/2009/articles/ravidayabhai%20.html). Excluding myself, he’s one of the two people I know who still have 4.0s after two years at Tech. (The other is a ChemE.)

I’m not going to downplay that there is a stigma with being a Management major, especially if you were originally an engineering major. But, as jim1980 said, this isn’t something you should care about because even industrial engineering majors get hated on, and our IE program has been top-ranked for close to two decades.

A lot of Management classes aren’t BS ones. It’s true that as long as Management Statistics is still taught by that professor, the class will always be a joke. But, on the other hand, I’d wager that many non-Management majors would have a very hard time with Business Law. The class is precisely the type of class that most Tech students hate because it’s almost exclusively based on dry reading; there’s no math.

First, let me say that I don’t think MGT is a bad program at Tech. Quite the contrary - I’ll go further than Jim and say that it’s actually the best program in Georgia (better than Terry or Emory, as a whole); however, it suffers compared to engineering. The CoM is like my friend. He’s 6’3" or 6’4", and whenever we go out, he’s always “the tall guy”, but we have another friend who is 6’8". Whenever all of us go out, the 6’4" guy is no longer “the tall guy”.

However, while MGT is a good program, it’s still not the first choice for most MGT graduates. GT has an admissions criteria set by the university and not by the college, so anyone coming into Tech, including MGT majors, have to be in that 3.7-ish UW GPA / 2000-ish SAT range. With that kind of score, you could get into one of the top 10 engineering programs, or one of the top 10 business schools. So, the sort of students that are interested in Business and have high enough scores to get into Tech generally look at other schools (unless they’re GA residents looking to save on tuition or have some other location related situation). This is why the MGT graduation rate is much higher than the MGT admissions rate (3 times higher, actually).

We also know that MGT majors have an advantage in admissions because of this. They’re not admitted with lower criteria, but experience shows that more of the “reach” MGT majors get in than the “reach” engineering majors. And this makes sense. Even though Tech’s official position is that major doesn’t matter, if Tech admitted 1000 ChBE freshman, there wouldn’t be enough Chem 1 availability. The Chemistry department would have to hire extra lecturers, lab assistants, lab space, and class room space, which the Chemistry department couldn’t do in a summer. The adcom doesn’t appear to use quotas in admission, but they do use major essentially as a hook for non-engineering majors.

Here is additional information on admission called Freshmen index.

FI = 500 x (HSGPA) + SAT I Verbal + SAT I Math or
FI = 500 x HSGPA + (ACT Composite x 42) + 88

[GAcollege411 - Fall 2008 First-Time Freshmen Statistics Average SAT Score, High School GPA and Freshman Index](http://www.gacollege411.org/StudentPlanner/CollegeEntranceRequirements/usg/4-year_profile.asp)

Ga Tech has average freshman index of 3229.

Ga Tech has accepted more OOS (specially international students, jump from 6% to 12%) this year than in the past a couple of years probably due to financial budget. International students are probably “full paid customers”. So incoming freshman is around 43% OOS+international compared to roughly 37% in the 2007 and 2008.

i had like 3K and was rejected :(

saw it for GSU, didn’t know all GA schools used it
