This week we're going to admit day at USC and UCSD. I know that USC will put on quite a warm welcome and entice students to go there. My biggest fear is that the UCSD welcome will not be as spectacular. Any input from last year? The cost difference of $48K versus $18K compels me to want an admit day worth remembering and making my kid want to go to SD

To be honest, ucsd isn't the greatest in the department of "enticing" students, or at least this was my thought last year when i was deciding which school to go to. The amount of mail they send home to parents is minimal compared to other colleges, let alone a private school, and they obviously aren't going to be all that spectacular (in comparison to USC who is definitely wealthier) in welcoming students, but i still enjoyed admit day last year, and thought it was fun walking around the library walk and going around the booths and eating good foods :). Judging by seeing so many tour groups going around these days on campus when I walk to the library or my classes, there's going to be TONS of people at admit day.

i think it might depend on which college you're in.
i know muir's admit day is gunna be pretty COOOOL :)

It also depends on your major. Engineering is the biggest school here, so they look a lot better than some of the others, and have some great presenters/presentations. There's tons of information all over the place, and lots of people to talk to, if your student is really into learning about the university, and not about the amounts of money they spend on a single day. The important part is to set the spectacle off to the side and say "Is this where I want to spend four years?" I went to UCLA's admit day, and arguably it should have more money to spend on such things than UCSD, and there was plenty of spectacle on campus, but honestly nothing they said made me really want to go there.

He is a CS major so I hope they make the kids feel wanted. So many of the schools accept you and then don't really support you as you progress. I know USC, Santa Clara U and some others show a genuine? interest in the students and want them to stay in the major and succeed as opposed to weeding them out and less making it to graduation in their original major..

I'm a CS major, and I can tell you that they really like their students. What does tend to happen, however, is that students enter CS, and after a few quarters find they love computers, but can't stand programming them. Because of this, we have a natural attrition rate, and so staff isn't really looking to weed out people.

Make sure to ask about the senior class on multiplayer games. Professor Voelker has for the past several years offered a course in multiplayer game design to seniors, who spend the quarter designing a complete game to be played during their finals week of Spring quarter. It's tough, I've been told, but amazingly fun. It's something I look forward to quite a bit, and something that I haven't found at the other colleges I applied to.

most people seem to be saying that admit day isnt something to get excited about and that its for the kids who are still deciding between colleges. ive already turned in my SIR. is it worth going if youre already decided? can i get anything worthwhile out of it? and do i have to show up early? hahaha

and collegefasho, why do you say that muirs admit day is going to be cool? im a muir admit... is it going to be cool enough to make me want to go?

i only say it's cool because im on the committee and im just a TAD biased hahahaha

but i do think that even though you're set on going to ucsd/muir, going to admit day will help you become acquainted with the campus, the people, the dorms, and the student orgs. for most people i think it's just to get a head start on knowing where everything is and what's available to them.

so what should we expect the weather to be like? i know sd has awesome weather but i just want to be prepared =) and also since i dont know what i will be doing once i get to the campus, where should i head first? im also a muir student.

it's been a little breezy recently but the weather is good overall. and if you're going to campus, i would recommend goin to the dorms first..but i didn't go to admit day so i dont know all the administrative stuff (if there is any). but i really think that dorm tour is pretty key because that's something u won't be able to do on a usual day.

Definitely go and check out the campus, look at your future dorms, have lunch in Price Center. I'll be at the Queer People of Color table, you should stop by and say hello!
