This may have been answered before, so if it has, please point me in the right direction. Anyway, I noticed BU has a rather high acceptance rate for a school of its caliber. So, I was wondering why exactly this is and whether or not this has negatively affected anyone trying to get a job after graduationg from BU. Any info would be appreciated.

It's high because BU has a low yeild rate. Way too many people apply and then don't go. So they have to accept more people in order to fill the 4500 freshman spots each year. It's not really a good thing, but it's only important to pushy moms who want to think their kid is special because they got accepted by a school with a low acceptance rate. To employers, it doesn't mean anything. They see the Boston University name, which from what I've heard is pretty, impressive. Many employers know that BU students are well rounded and have plenty of experience. When you apply for jobs, it's more about what you can bring to your employer than the prestige of your school, although that does help. What's important is that at BU you'll learn more professional details about your career and you'll get real work experience...which is pretty much the most important thing when applying for jobs.

In general very large schools have a higher acceptance rate. Its difficult to "call it" and bigger schools have a harder time estimating class yield. As BU offers more and more academic merit scholarships that also skews things since they are looking to increase their number of high achievers. Merit aid, especially for kids with parents earning too much for financial aid, influences decisions. Boston is a very attractive college town and many kids applying to Harvard, etc. apply to BU "just in case".

I wouldn't get too hung up on acceptance rates. If their average SAT is higher than another school's stats with a lower acceptance rate, so what??? Less than 1% of employers have any idea which comparable schools have different admissiosn rates and by the tme you apply for jobs what will be most important will be your current standing/qualifications not where you stood at the end of HS. All these top schools mentioned are terrific. Choose where you'll be happy.

dogs - I've missed seeing postings from you! Nice to see your common sense again. Or did I just not see your posts? My D has applied to BU,and we're waiting to hear the response. I guess we'll have to just pass the time chewing fingernails. Wish us luck!

H,
I haven't been here for several months but just beginning to check things out again for our next one coming up. Hope your daughter gets good news. Where else has she applied?

On another note to the OP, remember that some kids that apply to BU are applying to get into specific schools like the 7 yr. Medical Program or a specific music program. If they then get accepted but not into the Medical Program or other top choice then some may choose not to attend. Many kids are only accepted into CGS which has much lower thresholds for stats. So if they apply to CAS but only get accepted to CGS that may influence some applicants not to go.
