Admit Status for Fall, 2012

My S just received an accept from U. Maine and it included a merit scholarship. He's OOS and his ACT and SAT scores met the criteria for OOS Merit.

He submitted his application in early December for the 12/15 deadline.

I see there are nearly 200 views on this link, so I’ll post add’l information in case students are curious.

My S will be going to a Feb. 6th admitted student’s day, which was part of the information that came in the accept envelop.

Also, my S has 2 friends that applied right around the 12/15 date, and they still haven’t heard anything, so I think my son’s application was completed before the wave of other applications. The stats for all 3 guys are similar; one has higher GPA, another has a similar GPA, but they are all within a close range of each other. My son’s SAT/ACT score are 1 composite point or 10-20 SAT points higher, but his GPA is similar or slightly below, so I’m assuming they just haven’t heard because of the large volume of applications.

Hi Snowflake, don’t know if you’re still on CC but my D just got accepted to UMaine-Orono Honors College along with some scholarship $. Did your S end up going there? It’s now my D’s first choice but H has reservations about Northern Maine. He says there’s a reason it’s deserted and Steven King features it in his writing, though he has only worked as far north as Portland. We live in a small town in the Upper Hudson Valley and D is anxious to ESCAPE, we’re worried that the same small town attitude will prevail. A college town is different though and the experience will be different as most people are there because they want to be there not because it’s required by the state. Weather wise, she will be in her element and the school itself sounds like a perfect fit. We will be visiting next month but sometimes it’s nice to get another point of view so if your S is attending UMaine, what are your thoughts and impressions?

Comments from any current or past students/parents are most welcome. Even though nobody visits this thread, I am hopeful :)

Hi morkatmom, My S didn’t end up going to UMaine, but his two friends did. One is still there and the other transferred. The one still there loves it and also does a sport. The one that transferred decided to stop the sport, and then realized that without the sport another college was a better fit to what he now understood as his ideal major (marine biology). My S ended up at a school in the boonies of Northern NY, and he loves the small town atmosphere of that, so he also would have loved UMaine if he had decided to go there.

Your D will love the people at UMaine … everyone I met were friendly and happy to answer any questions. The weather is what it is, so you either like it or hate it. UMaine is not a fancy school, so if you want that, you may have to look elsewhere. Oh, and cafeteria food passed the 18-year-old boy test when we were there.

Good luck!
