http://www-epgy.stanford.edu/ -- a well regarded program of correspondence courses

Yes. You can send us software, but make sure to summarize it and if you want us to look at the result make sure executables are included and easy to run. (The probability is middling that we would actually look at it.) But if it's a mess, we certainly won't look at it.

EPGY is the Educational Program for Gifted Youth run by Stanford University. The program offers distance learning courses from the kindergarten level (5 year-olds) through college. For more information, go here: http://epgy.stanford.edu.

damn you guys are smart.

Not as smart as a sexy yeti beast.

Sir Ben I have a question for you. I am a student from India and have passed my 12th from CBSE board this year.
1) I had an All India Rank of around 6000 in Manipal Medical Entrance Exam (MAHE UGET), in my First attempt, in which I guess around 100,000 students appeared. Many candidates who wrote that exam were 'repeaters', who had passed their 12th exam earlier than 2005. So, will my MAHE UGET rank be considered as a good one or just an average achievement?

P.S.- Manipal was ranked 3rd in Medical College Rankings done by India Today Group in 2004.

2) In 9 & 10 grade, I was in a school which had a policy of not ranking its students. After my 10th grade, i transferred to another school, which had a ranking policy. But my rank varied in each semester. In my 11th final exam, I was in top 5% of my class (of around 400 Students), but in my 12th final exam, i slipped to top 10%. So, how will I calculate my possible rank?

1) Honestly, we wouldn't know about these details, but if you say you were in the 6th percentile on this very competitive examination, it iwll count in your favor.

2) Just list both facts -- then there is no calculation required and we will be able to view your achievements in context. Just so you know, top 5% or 10% at difficult Indian high schools is considered quite good.

Thank you for your quick response, Sir.

I did my 11th and 12th from DAV Public School, BSEB Colony, Patna

P.S. : There are 51 DAV Public School's in Patna Zone, with total strength of 55,000 students. My school is ranked 2nd (academically) in this zone by the DAV Board.

yo ben, where you wanna go to college man?

Ben is a student at Caltech. He helps answer questions about Caltech admissions.

say Ben when do you think Caltech migh go EA for Internationals you should seriously consider it man.

One more dilemma:
My counsellor just informed that due to policy restrictions he cannot put down my unofficially calculated rank on the forms as my school does not rank (which is 4/212). Well the rank does put me in the top 2% but if he writes the nearest decile he would have to write first decile..now this would mean top 10% which is not the exact representation of my rank. SO what should he do. Shall I tell him to write top 2% in brackets after noting first decile.

Ben, because my school requires that one take regular chem before AP chem, and I was able to learn all I needed for regular chem outside of school, I self-taught myself AP chem in about a month and a half with an AP chem book, but only got a 4 on the AP chem exam. Should I include the AP score on my application, and then explain it in an essay, or just leave it out?

thanks,
Mark

vampiro -- it would help you a lot if he wrote top 2% somewhere, so ask him to do so.

mmcduff -- include the 4 and say you self-studied it in a short note somewhere. it will still help you.

Thanks Ben.

SO no EA for intls I presume.

Not yet. : ( Sorry.

also, I got a 780 2 years ago on the SAT math, 770 this last pass (both times I missed one question, god d*** it), is this going to hurt me significantly? how many times do you get asked this? ;)

I get asked it lots, but it's okay. We will only consider the 780 (i.e. ignore the 770), and it doesn't matter that much. People have gotten the Axline scholarship with less.

Oh crap, I just discovered this forum yesterday (great time to start working on apps, of course), and I keep thinking of more ?s. What a good samaritan you are to answer all of our worries... so you keep talking about explaining how we don't have this opportunity or that opportunity, or how we did this, but not that, why we got an AP score we got... is this part of the first essay? Am I missing a page of the application with the question 'explain all the crazy crap in your life?'

I achieved Honors on the National Chemistry test last year. #1 does this help me at all at Caltech and #2 do I need to put anything more than Honors down or should I explain that it was top 150 on the national exam? Also Ben you talked about getting B's I have many B's in English History and language. Does this hurt me? Most of the B's are in the top classes though. Thank you very much.
