I apologize...I should have disclosed that I wasn't referring to Penn. I went through the Penn process as well, and you are definitely correct, they do a stong application process. I really wasn't referring to any school in particular. I am just basing it on what different admissions offices have done and how they talked to me and what other people on these boards have mentioned. I know the admission's process is not an exact science, but it just seems so unbalanced at times. When you think someone is going to get in, they don't... and when you think someone is going to get rejected, they get in.

Rejected: Yale
Accepted: University of Miami
Pending: Harvard and Georgetown SFS
Preference: Georgetown SFS

I dunno, I saw a lot of good applicants get into good schools on CC. I was rejected from Swarthmore, for example. It turned out that one of the departments (my present major is only a minor there) probably couldn't give me enough transfer credit and I was turned away almost immediately from the process. I bet there are reasons for every rejection, we just aren't privvy to them.

You know, after talking with all of these schools, I'm not really sure if they even go through our applications very thoroughly.

When you speak to an admissions offcier who has actually reviewed your application, then you will find a better explanation; usually, when speaking to officers who have not reviewed your file, they give it a cursory glance before responding.

Admitted: UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCI, UT Austin, GA Tech, Rose-Hulman

Denied: UCSD :-o

hehe. Needless to say i'm a little shocked about SD, but I found out after I applied that they were phasing out Chemical Engineering and were merging the program with bioeng. Anyhow, I submitted my SIR to Berkeley the day after I was admitted (only because it didn't let me do it the minute I was admitted!)

ACCEPTED: Brown
REJECTED: Columbia
PENDING: Harvard
CURRENT SCHOOL: Emory

I'm pretty sure I'm going to Brown. I don't know how I feel about giving up Emory though.

Duke: waitlisted.

I don't think I'm staying on. My dad offered me a BMW instead to stay at Dartmouth. I really can't either cause I'm taking classes here over the summer.

ThomasH32, I know what you mean.

This was the second year I applied this one school. The first time I applied I was wait-listed, the second time around; rejected outright?!? I couldn't believe it! I sent an appeal asking "how I could be qualified last year, and now not qualified this year?" All my stats went up, ECs were impressive, Associate's degree - Cum Laude...etc.

According to the Dean, I made a "very compelling argument." After a somewhat quick review of my stats, he made some other comments and moved my app off the reject list and onto the wait-list. I asked "where I needed to improve academically?" He said I "needed to complete a core requirement," so I asked which class he'd recommend? Well, he came back and said "I made a mistake, you have completed the core requirement."

Do mistakes happen? Of course. Will he rectifiy this? Was he sincere? I don't know, but he does have the opportunity fix this. I can only hope he's now fighting to get me off the dreaded wait list.

Hey, I know this is a bit off-topic, but what does it take to transfer to Stanford? I am currently a freshman at UNC-CH (honors program) intending to major in Chinese language and literature. I have a 4.0 for my first two semesters (well, ok, I highly anticipate a 4.0 for this semester) and a 1440 SAT. I want to transfer because after this summer (going to China to study) I will be nearly out of Chinese courses. Unforetunately my HS GPA was a 3.2, although I did take six AP's over my last two years. So if I do well at UNC for my next semester, could I possibly get in to Stanford as a junior? Thanks guys.

Oh yeah, I'm not ethnically Chinese. I'm white.

Applied and Accepted: Tufts, Washington University in Saint Louis, Cornell (CALS), College of William and Mary.

I didn't expect to get in everywhere that I applied!
I wanted to go to Tufts, but they didn't give me any financial aid. Wash U wouldn't accept half of my credits. I would like Cornell, but I think that I should applied to CAS because I want to be a biology/music double major. What's weird is that I haven't received any mailings from Cornell yet, but I know that I've been admitted. I am probably going to William and Mary because it's not as cold as Cornell. Plus, I could double major in music and biology, and it's much cheaper.

spyderman...good luck. I'm pulling for you. It's a very frustrating process. And believe me, it doesn't get any easier when you get older, either :(

ThomasH32,

Thanks for your kind comments. It's torture! BTW, I'm also quite non-traditional too. I don't know about you, but the opportunity cost for me is unbelievable. It just adds to the pressure.

Thanks again,
