Admitted at Harvard but waitlisted at Columbia?

not to mention that I have this theory that, technically, the waitlist spots are more selective than the actual acceptances (500 kids compared to like 1500)...so really I'm doing pretty well! haha

I think the theory about international students in need of financial aid might explain the discrepancy of HYP acceptances, but Columbia, Brown, Penn, Cornell, Dartmouth rejections. Harvard, Yale and Princeton are the only Ivies that can truly afford to admit all students regardless of their ability to pay. The other schools are need blind for US citizens/residents because funding is provided by the US government (see FAFSA). International aid, however, must come from the school's own pocket, and the other ivies often don't have a large enough endowment to finance this. If a school can only provide full funding for 15 international students, the other 2985 internationals in need of aid will be rejected.

To see if this theory holds true, how many of you in this scenario are international students with financial need?

Yeah, I'll join to because my results are also humorously surprising-
Accepted: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Duke
Waitlisted: Georgetown
Rejected: Columbia- mildly surprised, but since I got into my top 4, I definitely wasn't going there anyways

Tufts Syndrome!

This post is very relevent to me as well.

Accepted: Harvard, Cornell
Waitlisted: Dartmouth
Rejected: Penn, Columbia, Gtown, Yale, Princeton

No legacy.

Guess I got in where it counts.

has it occurred to any of you that maybe columbia is more than just a fallback school for hyps rejects? it's a prestigious university in its own right and if you treated it as a second-rate school then its no wonder that you were rejected.

sincerely,

a columbia 09'er who didn't even consider applying to snobby ol' hyps

The snobbery of "HYP is better" just makes me want to go there even less. Even the acronym is snobbish and exclusive. I fear, however, that some congratulations from me have already been demanded and assumed nevertheless. Why do I get that feeling. . .
