I was admitted ED (yay!) with a 3.7 UW GPA. However, I am on the verge of getting a C in Precalculus this semester. The rest of my grades are As and Bs. Do you think there’s any chance they will revoke my offer of admission? :/

Do your best, of course. But I doubt they will just revoke your admission. They may have you take an additional class or something, but that is about the worst they would do with a C, I should think. Just don’t go getting D’s or F’s in a bunch of classes…

Just keep the grades in the other classes up and do your best in precalc – but I don’t think you will have a problem with a C. Barnard’s focus leans towards arts and humanities – of course there are many students who are very capable in math and sciences, but the admissions department is very used to seeing students who have a hard time with math. They know that math grades are both objective and typically graded on a curve – so a student in a math course can work very hard and put in a lot of effort, and still come out with a low grade. That is, you either get the math problems correct or you don’t, you are marked off for wrong answers – and the definition of an “A” vs. a “C” often depends on how well or poorly your peers are doing with the math. An student with 82% average in one class might be getting a C, while a student with 79% in another ends up with a B, depending on the curve.

So while a C in an English course might signify that the student is slacking off, a C in a math course will probably be taken at face value – i.e., that you probably have a harder time with math. Since Barnard only will require you to take one math-type course during your 4 years – they are not going to be overly concerned if math is not your thing.

I’d add that I just took a look at your stats posted months ago in a chances thread. I see you had a 590 math SAT – that is what my d. got the first time around on her SAT. When she retook the test, it went down to 580… and if you can believe it, her ACT math score was even worse. So suffice it to say that Barnard didn’t accept either my daughter or you with high expectations for math.

I think your education and political involvement are extremely impressive – I can definitely see why Barnard did accept you – and I think that level of involvement and interest is what they want to see from you, as well as continuing strong grades in your areas of interest. However, I can also see that you have a pretty full schedule senior year with a lot of IB courses – that is just one more factor that Barnard is well aware of.

I wouldn’t worry about it! But that doesn’t mean give up on math, which I doubt you will do anyway since you are so concerned. just keep trying your hardest and keep your grade at least a C! If you struggle with math, (join the club!) I doubt math had anything to do with Barnard admitting you anyway. (congratulations on getting in by the way!! that’s awesome! I want to get in so bad!!) and it sounds like they don’t emphasize math that much (good for them!), so I think you’re fine. They only make you take 1 math??! that makes me want to get in even more!

haha anyway, don’t worry about it, just keep that grade a C or higher, and keep all of your other grades up.
