admitted but not to engineering

Son was admitted to UMCP but not to engineering, which he wanted. He really wants to attend! How hard will it be to transfer to engineering? Will he be able to get into all the engineering courses if not in the engineering school? THanks to anyone who can answer.

Same thing happened to my son. It says “Letters and Sciences” at the bottom of the letter…he was accepted to Georgia Tech for Biomedical Engineering, so this is a bit of a disappointment

Same here. I was accepted to the Chemical Engineering programs at two more competitive schools, so Maryland is a big disappointment for me.

It’s not too bad as long as you do well in the gateway classes which everyone takes the first year or so anyway. A lot of people graduate in an LEP that weren’t admitted to it as a freshman, engineering especially. It’s not the end of the world by any means.

Someone posted this in another thread, may be helpful to look over: [University of Maryland - Limited Enrollment Progams](http://www.lep.umd.edu/)

thanks terpgirl! Is it hard to get into the gateway courses if you’re not a freshman engineer major?

Shouldn’t be. Gateways are open to everyone as long as they have the prereqs (which aren’t restricted)

Getting into a LEP is not too hard as an internal transfer. You just need to keep your GPA up.

TerpGuy(you seem to have great advice), I’m honestly concerned about not being admited into Aerospace engineering as an internal transfer. Do you think its super competitive because its seems like a lot of people weren’t directly admitted into Clark

I also got admitted to UMD Letters and Sciences but not into Smith. How hard is it for an internal transfer to transfer into Smith and what requirements are necessary?

Thanks muzicmaker824,

I will admit I know less about Clark than I do Smith, but I would guess if you do well in school you will be able to transfer in.

One thing to remember is that while yes it will be quite competitive, some of those you see here will choose to go elsewhere. Also, other people despite how well they did in high school and how well they tested, will not be as successful in college due to distractions as well as other factors and their GPA will suffer. This results in those who appear competitive now ultimately less competitive.

One more thing to point out, it doesn’t seem like Clark is the hardest LEP to transfer into. From what I have heard from people around campus, Smith is the most “competitive”.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate it!!

Engineering transfer requirements are probably more clearly defined than business.

[Undergraduate Advising: Transfer Admission | A. James Clark School of Engineering](<a href=“Transfer to Maryland Engineering | A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland”>Transfer to Maryland Engineering | A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland)

The engineering school only has requirements that students have to meet which is maintaining a 3.0 over the same 1st year classes that engineering majors take. You meet those requirements, you’re in. There’s no competition (unlike Smith).

That being said, you will be a little behind as you won’t be able to take the introductory engineering course (ENES100) and your major specific courses until your 2nd year. If this bothers you, you can always make up for this smart planning and taking classes during summer/winter.

This thread has me very confused. My son applied to UMCP EA and received a letter this week that said he got into the honors college. When he applied, he indicated that he wanted to study electrical engineering. The letter does not say anything about engineering and does not say “Letters and Sciences” (like some others have noted). It is very unclear to me. Does this mean that he was rejected from engineering, but admitted to the honors college? Help, please!

At the bottom of your acceptance EMAIL (or look in the application portal), there should be a notation of “advising college.” If is says A James Clark then you were admitted to the engineering school. If it says Letters and Sciences, then you were not admitted directly to the school of engineering (but can take gateway courses and reapply as in-school transfer).

I had to find the snail mail (I saved it) and did note that the snail mail acceptance letter does not have that notation on the bottom. The engineering school sends out a separate letter welcoming you to school of engineering.

Honors college is not a separate course of study the way your wording seems to imply. It is a program that augments your education. This means you can take honors level classes.

Students can be admitted to honors and not engineering, or engineering but not honors.

Hope this helps…?

Look at the bottom of the acceptance.

Thanks. I am the parent and have only seen the paper letter, which made me think that he somehow got into a program that he didn’t apply to. I will get my son to log into his UM account and clear up the confusion. I appreciate your help.

Hi Muffy - I just wanted to add some info to address a question you had on the decisions thread (enough hijacking there, ha ha) about academic support for students that are not direct admits to engineering.

FYI, there is something called the Learning Assistance Service that supports all students, regardless of major. They offer general courses for academic success as well as specific to courses…here is info available online to check out. Hope this helps…

For science courses, the Guided Study Session (GSS) Program may help you. GSS offers FREE, peer-led, regularly scheduled study sessions for traditionally difficult courses. Based on the Supplemental Instruction model (SI), weekly 50-minute sessions are held using a collaborative learning process. Our data suggests that the more you attend, the higher your final grade will be in the course. Our schedule changes each semester, but GSS currently supports introductory chemistry, biology and physics courses.

S got email notification was just moved from admission to Letters and Science to admission to Engineering after review of recent grades. That was nice!
