I was admitted ED to my #1 school and the financial aid package I got is really unrealistic. It would be impossible for me to attend. Is it possible for me to get out of the ED contract since there’s no way I could pay for school next year?
Yes. That’s actually the only reason colleges will accept for backing out of an ED acceptance. Let them know, first, that it’s your number one school and that’s why you decided to go with ED but you can’t afford it. They may increase your package, this happened to my brother and he’s at Cornell now! If not, they can’t force you into something you can’t afford.
Yes. It is my understanding that if it is unaffordable, you simply decline ED within the time allotted. Sorry it didn’t work out and good luck. I know sometimes they suggest talking to the FA office. Did you run the net price calculator before applying?
This is UMiami.
Do you still have your other applications out? or did you withdraw them??
Was the FA pkg different from what was on the Net Price Calculator??
Hi all thanks for the advice, @mom2collegekids i have not withdrawn other apps yet, i applied to umass amherst (which is tied for me @ #1) and the net price calculator yielded us a little less than they gave us… so I have a feeling that they aren’t really into giving us money.
@CAMidwestMom I ran the net price calculator and got a result that was slightly less than I got, however, I was expecting more need based aid…
Did you run the net price calculator before you applied ED?
Yes @BelknapPoint I have been researching since 2013
The net price calculators include need based aid amounts. So…what more were you expecting from U of Miami?
@thumper1 my financial situation changed…we became more need based and indicated so on the css
So the net price calculator gave a result that showed less aid than you actually got, an amount that you called unrealistic, and yet you applied ED anyway?

???
this doesn’t make much sense.
The NPC gave you a result that includes need based aid and maybe merit aid. You got almost as much as the NPC indicated…so why would you expect MORE???
Need based aid is mostly what the net price calculators show. So it sounds like you got about what it showed, which is unaffordable. I think you need to withdraw your ED application, and make sure you have at least one affordable option on your list.

? Are you OOS for UMass?
Have you already received an aid pkg from UMass? If not, what do you mean?
@mom2collegekids In state for UMass,got scholarship for test scores
Which scholarship did you get? the Abigail Adams one that just covers the tiny tuition? Or a bigger scholarship that covers those HUGE fees?
Run the UMass NPC and copy/paste the results
@mom2collegekids
Estimated Net Price After Grants and Scholarships: $11,370
their NPC only calculates need based grants… but i’d get about 7,000 off of this price leaving it at around $4300
Do you know if UMass will stack that merit on top? are you certain that UMass won’t reduce their grants because you got merit instead?
What is your FAFSA EFC?
Can you copy/paste the results?
I don’t know if I will get merit based aid…
College Cost:
11,370
Total Aid Available
This includes the federal student aid we estimated and any of the other aid you entered.
$7,465
Difference $3,905
Your estimated EFC is 0
@mom2collegekids
So basically, it will not be expensive.
