Admitted ID, changing major

I no longer want to study the major that I listed on my application to Rice ID. I was admitted to the Engineering School, but I want to switch to a major in a different school.

Is this something I do when I actually attend Rice in the fall, or can I make this change now? Thanks

You have two years to declare your major, and even then, you can change it after that. (DD changed hers several times!!) Rice gives you the opportunity to try different things out. The exceptions are music and archi majors - I think you have to get accepted to that major. Everyone else is accepted to the school, and can choose and change majors at will.

you cannot make this change now. to declare, add, or drop a major you need to meet with someone in that department and get them to sign off on it. you can look at the form if you are curious..

Unless you want to transfer into the Schools of Music or Architecture, you can choose any program in any other school you so desire.

Transferring out of the Music and Architecture programs entails a hard struggle.

what about transferring INTO the architecture program? jakpot, you said "Transferring out of the Music and Architecture programs entails a hard struggle" - did you mean out, or in?

jenniferstheman - it's totally OK! However, because they accepted you in the Engineering school, your first faculty academic advisor (who you will first meet with during O-week) will be from the engineering division. However, you can explain to him or her that you're doing a different major - he or she will sign off on your schedule regardless.

The only loss you might suffer is lack of advising/info in whatever new major you want since the engineering advisor might not know specifics about, say, what a freshman history major might need to take. You can remedy the situation by spending the summer thinking about what major you want to pursue and asking other Rice students (at O-week or other times) for advice about a freshman schedule for a ____ major.

If you need any help, feel free to contact me. I'm doing a BS in bioc and an BA in Engl (and I'm pre-med).

emilia,

I am curious as to why you decided to get two degress as pre-med student (since I am thinking about doing the same thing). Is double majoring and getting two degrees the same thing, and how feasible is it?

jenniferstheman, check your messages =).

i am not positive, but for anyone who is curious, i think it is that the BS and BA combination requires that student to get two degrees. i think you can only double major (meaning the normal credit requirements apply) with two BA's. double major is still 120 credits, while double degree (dual degree?) is 150 credits. to put this all in proportion, 120 over 8 semesters is 15 credits, the normal load. the average student has 24 credits coming in. 150-24 over 8 is 15.75 credits, so a dual degree isn't really an extreme thing to do for many people. as you can see, it is pretty much normal for the normal student credit-wise. i think 1/3 of students double major.
