ADMITTED STUDENT DAYS...WORTH ATTENDING IF ALREADY COMMITTED?

so my daughter applied ED and has been accepted. So she is committed- there is no drama and no suspense, and no decision to be made. there are 2 admitted student days this Spring…is it still worth attending one of these? She doesn’t think so since it will be full of kids who are still deciding and many or most of them wont be her classmates in the end, and she doesn’t need to hear the school sell itself anymore.
think she is right?

My D didn’t go to her accepted student days either. She felt like she was already 100% sold and had already been to campus multiple times, including for a summer program.

Not necessary if she has already visited.

Depends on the overall cost to attend one of these. If you can easily afford both the cost and the time, I’d recommend attending one. In our case as an RD admit, although my son was 99.999% sure of committing to the college of his choice, we did attend the Preview Day and it was a whole lot of fun and exciting. But then, it was our first visit. So if you’ve already visited the college in the past, then it’s another story.

It isn’t necessary since the decision is made. However my D chose to go to accepted student day with her ED acceptance. Her college was within driving distance so we agreed to take her. Her reasons for wanting to go were:

  1. Social – she had been on a facebook page for accepted students and had made some friends online that she wanted to meet in person before school started.
  2. Dorms - they were giving a tour of all of the available freshman dorms and she wanted to see all the options before filling out her housing request form.
  3. Shopping at the college bookstore.

I think going to accepted students day helped my D start college on a very confident note. She also got into the dorm she wanted. Again, it was within driving distance so there was no great expense involved.

And congrats to your D for getting into her ED school!

Absolutely not necessary. But at many schools, it can be a good opportunity to get answers to questions you may not have had as an applicant or didn’t want to ask. There will be way more resources available than at any of your earlier visits.

These could be things like talking to a coach about being a walk-on, chatting with the nutritionist about how to communicate dietary needs, chatting with current students about orientation trips, opinions on freshman seminars, etc.

At some schools, it can be a chance to meet potential roommates (if they aren’t assigned) or check out housing options (if you have a choice. )

But if it’s costly or very inconvenient, don’t lose sleep over it.

@happy1 and @gardenstategal reminded me.

You can also visit the FA office to request for a review should you feel it warranted. I know some families have.

Since my son was interested in all things music, he visited the music dept and asked lots of questions about joining various ensembles, etc., as well as to tour the facilities relating to music, i.e., practice and rehearsal rooms.

Regarding the dorm rooms, my son did get to stay overnight at this residential college to know that he didn’t want to be assigned to that college. Well, he ended up being assigned to that one.

What’s the housing situation? If it’s a school where people find their own roommates on social media and etc., then the admitted student events can be a great place to meet up with prospective roommates and vet them in person. If it’s assigned housing then, less important - can still be nice but not worth a lot of inconvenience and expense, and not worth pushing if she isn’t into it.

Not necessary, but can be fun. In D19’s case, her grandparents live in the city her college (also ED acceptance) so we combined it with a visit to them (of course, also made it cheaper as there were no hotel costs involved). Her college did not show dorms on normal tours but opened them - all the ones that take freshmen, not just one “show room” - for admitted students day so that was something, as was the school specific programming and socials. And I enjoyed the parent session. Plus, swag.
