Some schools are having a single admitted students event in April. I’m wondering whether this is in fact the best time to visit or whether having hordes of prospective students (1000+ in some cases) there makes it more difficult to size up what the school is really like. Is it advisable to arrive early or stay late?

All the Admitted Days we attended required an overnight stay but we still preferred to get there early in the morning. We did the early tours/sessions (sometimes they had the same tours at different times) then explore the campus on our own.

I really am interested by all the talk of “we” here. I thought these events were for the kids, not the family.

The admitted students days we attended were all targeted at families - there were even separate events for students and parents. The parents are paying the bill and deserve the time also to ask questions.

I recommend visiting on the official admitted students days and if possible, on other occasions, too. For DS who is now a sophomore, we did ALL of the accepted student days, which meant schlepping across the country, but it was well worth it. DD, who is making her final decision right now, spent an entire day and evening at one of her EA universities in February and she got all manner of personal attention from the students and the faculty. (Bear in mind some universities/colleges do not permit this, so you have to ask.)

I’m wondering how everyone handled the absences from school.

Consolation: the admitted days were targeted at the students as well as the families. They had “parents” stuff on the agendas. We didn’t see a single student without a parent/family with them. For us, it was the first time we visited the campus so we were interested

We had one admitted day during Spring break. The other days were excused and all we had to do was send a note in.

Her visits to admitted students days (which included 2 school days) were the only absences my daughter had senior year (she even went in the day after prom which is senior cut day). College visits were considered excused absences for seniors at her HS.

Our admitted student day is a two day family event.

The HS allows excused absences for college tours and related visits. The only day my kid missed this year was senior cut day.

for us. we’ve been asking questions relating to our son. if they have a program, study area, work space, I ask about it. if an option to view a space, talk with kids in the same program is offered we jump on it. if the other parents are going to be quiet, they will miss out. in our heads we are there now to imagine ourselves embedded with this college, fully invested.

Yes i would like to hear it.
