Student Ambassadors will pick their prospie up from CWRU LIVE in Adelbert Gym between 4:30 and 5:00, and will then take them to Thwing to pick their bags up. From there, the night is theirs-- they must stay on campus and are not allowed to go to parties with alcohol, but they can basically do whatever they want. If there is an event going on on campus, Case will provide free tickets (Case is performing Kiss Me Kate next week, so I will probably take my prospie to see it!). I usually take my prospie to dinner at Leutner, the freshman dining hall, and then we just hang out for the night. My prospies have always been a different major than me, so I’ve tried to introduce them to my friends in different majors, as well as in their major, so they can answer questions I can’t! Then ambassadors take their prospies to the Mandel Center to check out the next morning between 8:00 and 10:00. Many students choose to leave from there, but some go and shadow classes and such. Everyone has a very different, unique experience, but I’d say all prospies see an awesome side of Case!!

Me and my son visiting 12/13 event. He is a BME major. Does he need to bring any sleeping etc with him (Gatech told us to bring a sleeping bag/pillow/etc for the student). I booked myself a room at Hampton in downtown. Reading up on downtown and it sounds very touristy. The main thing to see rock and roll hall and fame. We will staying there fri nite till sat afternoon so my son can also see the city.

@mwahal and @ wilparkmom My D and I are coming for the April 12/13 event as well. We are from the San Francisco area. D is looking at Biology/Medical Anthropology.

Our admissions officer has been very helpful and sent me the April 5/6 program. My D is very excited after seeing the program and wants to attended classes. Hope to see you at the Parent’s reception.

Since we will not be attending until the 22nd it would be great if you could post about the experience.

Hi attending 12-13th too, will you be renting a car from the airport
BME. Could you post the program , any hotel suggestions

The admitted student day ended where the sophomore/junior visit day started - everyone was invited to participate in class observations, tours of dorms, activity panels, financial aid, internship, research etc. My D is very interested and we found the day to be very well done.

I would just like to correct some of the information that jkrtist has provided.
- Many students who are not first years are hired as hosts - I’m a second year student and I host students every weekend.
- You’ll likely NOT be assigned with another prospective students; we prefer to provide a one-on-one experience.

Also, just some general information:

1) you should bring a sleeping bag unless your host says otherwise. I’m a sophomore, so my suite has a couch and space for an air mattress, so my prospective students don’t need them, but if you’re staying with a freshman, you should definitely bring a sleeping bag.
2) NewJerseyMom02 - I’m from New Jersey, so if you have any questions about travel, feel free to message me! Coming to CWRU, since it’s so far from home, was a difficult choice, but was definitely the best choice I’ve ever made!

Hi Soft Kitty;
WE are going to overnight program tomorrow, but my son doesn’t want to sleep over. He is undecided about school. My biggest concern, aside from academic reputation, etc, is the safety of the area. It seems like a good percentage of kids get robbed, mugged etc? is that true and is off campus that unsafe? How late do you walk around at night by yourself?
Thanks for the info.

I definitely wouldn’t say that a good percentage of students get mugged. It happens pretty rarely, in my experience, and generally only to people who are walking alone late at night listening to their iPods or carrying expensive things in plain view and not paying attention to their surroundings.

Parts of Cleveland off-campus aren’t particularly safe, as you’d expect with any major city, but the Case Police force, Orientation Leaders, and older students are very good at making sure that new students know how to stay safe. University Circle, the part of Cleveland where CWRU is located, is generally considered to be pretty safe. Most of downtown is also pretty safe, too. Again, as with any major city, you have to be smart…walking around alone after dark listening to an iPod and not paying attention is a bad idea. After dark, I’ll generally either call SafeRide (a service that escorts our students from campus and several surrounding areas to anywhere on campus) or walk with a friend. I’m from a pretty small, suburban town in New Jersey, and I’ve never felt unsafe while on or off campus. We get security alerts notifying us of any muggings or robberies that occur on campus, or in any area around campus that students will typically frequent. I’ve posted a link below that should answer any questions you have!

I’m from CA. They provide transportation from the airport right?

Not that I know of, but you may want to call and ask. My son flew in tonight from California. Landed at close to midnight and took a taxi to campus. $38 cash out of pocket. Some of the hotels may have shuttles to the airport and Case.

SoftKitty, I sent you a PM

The Rapid (the train) goes right from the airport to Case. Students have passes, but I’m sure it isn’t much to get a two way ticket.

@NewJerseyMom02 My D went to the April 12/13 overnight at Case. We spent two full days on campus attending a number of sessions. These were very informative and very well done. D also attended some classes. Our admissions officer sent us the April 3/4 program and that was very helpful in planning the two days.

I will send you a PM with my email and if you want please feel free to write to me and I will forward you the program from April 13/14. You will however get yours couple of days before your session starts.

(Posting from another thread - Case vs GT)
I just came back from overnight program with my son (April 12/13). Overall, I am impressed with Case. Small school environment, small classes, get to know your profs on first name basis.

But, except BME, I don’t see Case in any way far superior or ahead in its field. Case has lots of money, no doubt, and its show up in the merit scholarship, but in the end, I didnt see that kind of money trickling into the engg departments and the labs. Almost all the labs I visited (thinkBOX, robots, aeronautics, etc) - all are funded by Alumni or private donors. Even all the RFPs are paid by private or Alumni.

My son also got in GT, and we are OOS too (California). For us, GT will be about 5-6k$ extra per year. We didnt get any money from GT, and got “tons” from Case. But that “tons” of money makes the COA of Case just 10-15% lower than GT.

We are visiting GT this Saturday for their 22/23rd program. Hopefully I can give more input after I come back from GT.

BTW – Cleveland and Ohio state in general – hard hit due to recession. Entire Euclid ave is sort of closed after Cleveland Clinic till the downtown. Same as Chester ave. Also in downtown Cleveland, more than 1/2 stores are closed/boarded, same as buildings. Looks like the major employers in downtown cleveland are banks (PNC, Key) and lots of federal building. The downtown looks like a ghost town after 6pm. Only eating places aka pubs are on 4th Street. But nothing much else otherwise. Lots of industries surrounding cleveland are shut or limited work force.

Overall - impressed with college in general, but let down by the city. If GT was not in equation, could have made strong case for Case. But, now will have to goto GT and then decide.

My son’s host was a freshman and he had total of 3 guests. Also most of hosts in the adlbert gym on thursday night at minimum of 2 and about 3 guests. So I am not sure what softkitty is talking about 1:1 experience.

Because of the growing interest in Case, they have had to assign the student ambassadors (myself included) more than one student. They have always tried to keep it at a 1:1 ratio, but sometimes it just isn’t possible.

My daughter’s overnight experience was 4/12. She was the only guest so I guess it just depended. I thought she might be paired with another prospective student but it was just her.

My D was also the one only guest for her host and she had a great time as she was taken to different dorms and got to meet a lot of her host’s friends. The only problem seems to be that D came away with the feeling that Case was predominantly Ohio natives with very few out of State students.

Anyone know what the geographic distribution of students is year to year?
