My daughter was accepted but we have never been to the campus. We have heard tons of good things! Does anyone have any insight into the differences, if any, between attending an 'admitted student' tour and visit on a weekday in February vs. the Decision Days that I hear are held in April? Or, for that matter, I hear they do a multicultural overnight in April too? We will only get there once so I want to make it the most informative so she can make a good decision.

If I recall correctly, my daughter and I attended a Decision Days event in April. Positives were free parking, cafeteria vouchers for both of us, and the opening session. There were three students who shared their positive experiences at UD and the admissions office shared the numbers on total applications and acceptances to show that the admissions process is truly competitive.

The negative was that the tour was pretty much the same one we had received during our initial visit.

Later in the day, we met with a Professor from the BioMed Engineering department and he did a great job in convincing my daughter that there were abundant options for undergraduate research. He even gave us a 1-on-1 tour of his lab. That meeting sealed the deal.

I’m intrigued by the psychology of college visits. Visit on a warm, sunny day and the campus looks great. Visit on a cold or rainy day and everything looks bleak. It was warm & sunny that day and the Green was filled with happy students hanging out between classes. I’m sure that helped with the decision as well.

1.5 years in and she has no regrets. It’s HER school.

@LongIslandMom - My D is a junior at UD and it was the best decision of her life. She absolutely loves the school and like Fauster said, “it is her school”. Our first visit to the school was a Blue and Gold Day a year before she applied. A great day with all the benefits of free parling and free lunch, etc etc. We returned again for the Decision Day event and while I think it was very similar to the Blue and Gold day I would venture to say that it had a bit more going on than just a regular visit on a “normal” day. My daughter got to meet with advisors and meet people within her major. She already knew prior to going back to Decision Day that this was the school for her, but she met a lot of people that felt the same way and confirmed her decision was the right one. I will say that our first visit to UD was on a rainy dreary day and my D still loved it. If you can love a school in the rain you will love it!! If you can wait for the Decision Day it would probably be best but if it is the right for school for her she will know regardless of when she goes. Good Luck!! My S has applied this year and we are still waiting for an answer.

My D did both… we live about 2 hours away. We did the admitted student tour and then returned to decision day 2 weeks later. She really liked the school after the admitted student day but she needed a little more time to decide and the decision day did just that. She is a soph and LOVES it at UD.

I emailed UD this exact question and am waiting for an answer so thank you for posting. we were wondering the same thing because we already toured UD twice and wondered if going to one of these events was overkill since we already love to school and weren’t sure if we would see anything new or different. if we go to decision day do you think we will be able to talk to the nursing department and staff? That would be the only additional thing we would like to see.

lefty at the admitted tour did you happen to get free parking and lunch as well? were you able to meet with Department major or view a class?

Regarding a meeting with a specific department, I called on my own and set things up. The person I spoke with during my initial call was not surprised by the request and efficiently set up the meeting for the afternoon of our visit.

cakeisgreat, no we didn’t do any of the extras that day. I believe there were some options for it. My mind is foggy now it was two years ago. My situation was unique. I had booked a regular tour. My D has already been accepted but I just booked a regular tour. My niece was just starting her college tours… (she was a year younger and a Jr at the time) When we got to our tour my D’s tour had been moved to accepted students. They run them at the same time as a regular tour. We did the accepted students admission program and then went on a regular tour to be with our family members. BTW my niece is currently a freshman at UD.

I really loved the Decision Day. if you have already done 2 regular tours I’d rec doing the Decision Day. It’s a very festive atmosphere. You have a small program in your major and they introduce the faculty and there is a Q and A segment. There is entertainment, food and tours if you’d like them. Since we had just done the regular tour about 2 weeks prior we took the bus up to North Campus to explore up there. Also they have a lot of the department of the school set up near the lunch area. You can talk to dining, transportation, safety, housing, healthcare, etc… If you can make it there I suggest it. It was a happy upbeat day and really got both myself and D excited about attending. That was the day I got to purchase my decal for my car to make it official too!

PS- can’t remember if we got free parking at the tour but we def did at Decision day. I kind of think we did get free parking since we had to meet at Trabant for our tour. (admissions building was being refurbished at the time)

cakeisgreat:

On Decision Days parking is free and a continental breakfast (Honors Program students have a separate breakfast activity) and lunch is provided.

There is a separate component lasting around 2 hours just for students admitted to the Nursing Program. There are presentations by the Nursing Department faculty first describing the Nursing Program and then you are broken up into groups for additional activities. One activity is a tour of the Nursing Facilities including the SIM Lab and possibly now the new Nurse Managed Healthcare Facility which is about 3 years old. Another activity includes presentations by current UD nursing students about their involvement in the Program. Throughout all of the activities students and parents are given the opportunity to ask questions and interact with faculty and current students. IMHO this was very well done and really can provide a student with what they could expect by attending the Nursing Program at UD. If you are not sure about what Program to attend I think this in itself would be a good reason to attend a Decision Day.

Hope this info is helpful. Good luck.

thanks guys! from the sound of it the decision day definitely sounds like the right thing for us to attend. I am glad there will be a nursing component I will sign up as soon as we are able!

enjoy and good luck! I’m hoping I will be joining you for one as well! fingers crossed! :)

Fingers crossed for you too lefty!

I go there now, and I went during Admitted Students day before I even knew Decisions Day existed. I had a great time, but I’m sure it really doesn’t matter which day you pick, because it has had no baring on my life whatsoever. I’d just go in April when the weather is nice because we’ve been having a pretty nasty winter in Delaware.

signed up for decision day! can’t wait!

just to confirm, Decision Day is the full day (8:30-3:00) visit, correct?

@a430qt yes it is. Although it is not mandatory you stay the whole time. I believe my D and I left around 2ish. It all depends on how much time you want/need to spend there. There is a lot of information for you as well as entertainment during lunch, etc… If the weather cooperates there is no better way to see the campus.

Thanks, lefty1. We did the tour last year. Looking forward to a more detailed visit. Sucks that it starts early (we live in NJ)

us too! I usually will grab a room close by the night before but not sure what I am doing this year. Who knows… maybe I will crash on my daughter’s floor in the towers. jk! (she would die of embarrassment! )

That’s my plan (stay the night before)…

I would definately recommend, if you have not done so already, that you devote a little time walking up and down Main Street in Newark during your visit. The Bookstore is there and there are multiple eateries that many, if not most students, visit to socialize and even (believe it or not) study and work on school projects. I have visited many college campuses and I have yet to see one that compares to UD in the variety and the easy accessablility of these types of things. Newark Deli and Bagels (just below the Green on Main Street) has consistantly been identified as the best of its type in the country by many campus review listings. Have a great visit everyone.
