My daughter was fortunate enough to be admitted to Barnard through the early admissions process. She recently recieved an email about the Admitted Student Weekends coming up in April. She is very interested in attending, but we are not local to the NYC area, so attending will come with some travel and cost associated with it.

I wanted to know from students, or parents of students, that have attended such events in the past if they have found it worthwhile. It sounds like it could be great, but just want to check before we commit to it completely.

Thanks,

Congratulations to your daughter, and to you! I found it to be worthwhile, if for no other reason than it served as acknowledgement for all the work my D had put into earning the privilege of attending Admitted Students Weekend. That was, to me, enough reason to make the (admittedly expensive) trip. Incidentally, my D is a sophomore at Barnard and is having a GREAT experience!

It’s a short trip for us, so our family went last year. Of course, for those not admitted via ED (and my D wasn’t) it helps them make up their minds, and the weekends are set up to sell Barnard. Beyond that, I guess one of the main benefits is to make it seem real and to heighten the excitement of coming back in the fall. It helps the new student to get a feel for what her classmates are like and to validate her choice. I also had a useful meeting with a financial aid officer, which was somewhat reassuring, and we were impressed by Barnard faculty in their presentations; but again, we weren’t 100% certain to be choosing Barnard. I wouldn’t say it was essential for someone already sure to come. There will probably be a chance to meet a few others in the incoming 2017 class at a local gathering in the summer. Was for us, anyway.
