I applied mid-October and I just received my notification of acceptance yesterday for CLA. I feel ecstatic, but also quite surprised given my lower than average stats.
Congrats, @akozia! Are you able to share your stats and your resident status (in-state vs. out-of-state)?
I still haven’t gotten a decision, I applied in mid September but my application wasn’t complete because CollegeBoard delayed my scores until Mid-October! I applied for Fashion Design, 3.72 GPA, 1950 SAT. I’m guessing this means I’ve been rejected! Oh well!
@flaminhaute Nope, not necessarily! For the most part, it seems like the very strong, obvious candidates are being admitted first… and then some people are just lucky enough to get their decisions early on. It almost seems a bit random to me. I think a lot of admissions decisions start coming in after the priority deadline has passed and the majority of applications have already come in, which would be after December 15th. When I went on a campus visit, that’s what one of the guides told me. Just be patient, think positive
@Mamelot Thank you! And sure, my stats are:
GPA: 4.2 weighted/4.0 scale
ACT: 26 Composite
In-State Applicant
Major: Global Studies (CLA)
Rank: 1/217
Hope my short list of stats can be of some help.
Thanks @akozia. Your stats look fine for CLA so it’s no surprise you were admitted. My D2 has a higher test score (1260/1960 SAT) but lower GPA rank (top 1/3) and she is still waiting on a decision.
Congrats again!
I’m honestly overwhelmed! I absolutely wasn’t expecting an admit today! WOW
Congrats to everyone of class 2020!
Here are my stats:
College of Engineering and Sciences
Major: Chemical Engineering
SAT: 2160
SAT II: Chem and Math 2- 800
GPA: 4.0 uw
Rank: ~1/50
My son got in to CSE on December 8. He submitted his application on 11/15. Had to update his activities and emailed to school a week later. From WI.
GPA 3.94 uw 4.01 W
Top 10% no rank
ACT 35
SAT 2100 didn’t send
SAT 2. Math 2 800 physics 730 didn’t send
His first acceptance.
My son applied to CSE-knowing it was a stretch. They say they consider for other schools that fit, but no word yet. He meets all criteria for CFANS and CLA.
Applied 10/01
ACT: 27
GPA: 3.75
Very active/involved
NHS
Getting discouraged…
You won’t get in. My friend got denied with a 28 from CSE. And he was valedictorian. @kelleygirl
Just because someone didn’t get in with a 28 ACT, doesn’t mean that someone else will not get in with a 27. So many other variables that they consider when making these decisions.
Guys, could someone PLEASE help me out. I’m scared. I sent in my application on September 28th to CBS, second choice CLA. I still have not heard a response. My stats:
GPA: 4.13
ACT: 25
EC’s:
chamber orchestra
top school orchestra
Key club president
international club
orchestra executive board secretary
Tri-M honor society
National Honor Society
National English Honor Society
National Science Honor Society
National Spanish Honor Society
AP Scholar
and a few other awards to go on with it. Leaving out some other things due to the fact that I am not going to bore you all with what I do on a daily basis. But I do also have a part-time job.
This is one of my top schools, and I really want to get in. If I don’t get into CBS but into CLA, when can I transfer into CBS? My fee for my minnesota was waived as they asked me to apply, and I’m just wanting my acceptance. Can anyone give some insight?
I applied on November 15.
They are still admitting obvious stats (above average stats for the college, etc.) or people with obvious hooks to the college of first choice. That means that if you are even a hint of a reach or even a median applicant you could be put on hold for now. It doesn’t mean you won’t be admitted - you just won’t be admitted “Early”.
The Priority Deadline doesn’t even end till next week. Most of the decisions come out after that date. We’ll still see some stragglers with blow-out stats applying after the Priority Date and getting in, but the majority of decisions around that time will be people whose applications were on hold.
UMN doesn’t have a set “Eligibility” or “Admissions” Index that objectively determines every applicant’s status. An early application still has to be compared to others applying unless the person obviously has higher academic stats. They have a LOT of history at this point so they know in general what “higher academic stats” means for each college.
But it’s a big university and there are still lots of slots left. Otherwise you’d see wildly high “median” admissions stats for next year based on what’s been posted so far!
Has anyone heard back from CEHD yet?
@ericakalberer I had a complete application on August 28, accepted mid October
@Mamelot Thanks again! And best of luck to your daughter as she awaits her admissions decisions!
I had asked about “the call” previously, and my daughter got one last evening from a student working at admissions, asking how her applications were going, her interest in the school, housing preferences, etc. She was already accepted to the CLA/Honors College a few weeks ago, so I presume they are gauging her continued interest in attending, financial aid, and trying to firm up acceptances by adding a human voice to alter the perception of an automated, stat-driven process. They’re smart to do it – people want to feel accepted, especially very stressed people.
Yeah, if you’re a higher stat student for the college you’ve been admitted to and anticipating the call, have a good idea of what you’d say in response to questions like “Why do you want to go to UMTC? What do you like about it? Are there certain forms you like? Etc” and also have some questions you’d want to ask them. I was caught completely off guard when I got the call and a bit flustered in the beginning when she asked me questions. I’m not sure how significant this is in the long run but it’s definitely a good idea to know what you’d say.
I understand wanting to give strong answers and not leaving them with an impression that they made a bad decision regarding admitting you. However, I don’t think that they would rescind an acceptance decision based on a phone conversation. Does anyone think that could be a possibility?
