Admitted Students - Class of 2020

Accepted to the Carlson School of Management!

3.821 Unweighted GPA
27 ACT
17% Class Rank
8 AP Classes

From Minnesota
Applied on the 10th of September

DS accepted into College of Liberal Arts

35% class rank
32 ACT
2070 SAT
740 US History SAT Subject Test - (his intended major; not certain if this was considered)
4 AP courses completed through junior year with three As and one B; is taking 4 AP courses this year
AP Scores: 5 U.S. History; 5 World History; and 5 Human Geography (he submitted these but not certain if they were considered for admission purposes)

Applied 8/23 as an out of state applicant (Texas) and admitted on Oct. 19.

I applied to the college of liberal arts and college of education in August but my application was complete around the first week of October (School didn’t send transcript until October).

25% class rank (Doesn’t really matter as I take all college classes and our school only weighs AP classes)
3.98 High School GPA and 3.96 college unweighted GPA
27 ACT (Retaking but average college of education scores are 25 and liberal arts is around 28 so shouldn’t be a problem)
Out of state (Seattle, WA)

I just got accepted into the College of Biological Sciences! I applied on 9/19 as an out of state student.

3.93 UW GPA, 4.453 W
32 ACT (34 E, 31 M, 32 R, 31 S, 10 W)
59/484 class rank

I’m so excited! When do they usually announce scholarships and invite students to the honors programs?

Congrats @TotallyTrudy! Honors notification is by Tracker, I believe. Scholarship notification is by regular mail.

Accepted (CEHD) today :)! App was complete on Aug. 28

OOS, California!
3.4 UW GPA, (10~ weighted classes)
1450/2160 SAT, school doesn’t rank!
Personally, I really like my ECs & think they fit in nicely with my major (Family Social Sciences)!

I’m so excited. This is probably going to be where I end up!

Congrats @freezycool - so happy for you.

Thank you @Mamelot :)! <3 <3 <3 <3

Way to go @freezycool!!

Yay @CyclonesGrad - this is the D side of the twins correct? Has your son been accepted yet?

Congrats, CG! Still waiting for CSE here. At least our safety school (Auburn) came through, so just trying to be patient…

@mamelot Yes, D side. She knows because I had her go on the tracker last night to check. She had checked last Thursday and it said all applicants would be notified by February. She thought she would have to wait until then.

Son has not checked the tracker at all. He has been accepted to UA with full tuition scholarship so he thinks that is where he will go due to money. I have told him it really depends on what UMN offers because if only about $6K difference/year UMN may be better choice.

We are going to visit ISU and Iowa.

He has same GPA and slightly better class rank than daughter due to accelerated PE that his wrestling coach teaches. Kind of lame!

He scored 32 ACT first sitting and then retook to see what would happen and scored a 33.

I will let you know if he gets accepted.

@s16s18s21s25 Our safety school for admittance and finances is UA. Both DS and DD received full tuition scholarships to School of Engineering.

Once offers come from other schools, that will be the discussion: money vs. reputation.

We will be visiting ISU and Iowa.

S is so set on his first choices that he is refusing to consider attending Auburn, although he acknowledges why he had to apply to more than 3 reach schools (S is not very practical). He really doesn’t want to go anywhere hot, but since Auburn’s engineering was ranked (he is all caught up in rankings) he was willing to apply there as the safety. He also did a summer program there. Auburn gives pretty good scholarships too–especially for S’s 35 ACT. We live in TN, so both are only 4-5 hours away. S wants to be more in the midwest, though. I have explained if he wants cold, he may well be in luck if MN, Purdue, and/or UIUC come through.

@s16s18s21s25 Problem with Purdue and UIUC is that they do not give much money. THey both need OOS students to help sustain the university.

What does he want to major in? Can I suggest Iowa State? It is a highly ranked school and is all about engineering. He will get enough merit money at ISU to make it close to UM-TC IS tuition. I would think he would get UM-TC IS tuition depending on his class rank.

Does his HS rank? If so, what is his?

Look at this for info on admitted students profile.

S is into computer science, actually, which does not necessarily fall within the school of engineering, depending on the college. His class rank is bad due to a pretty competitive school and a whole bunch of Bs in 9th and 10th, in great part due to travel baseball, football, and concussions. So…although he got a 4.7 junior year (including 4 APs) class rank is a dismal 37%. He has 7 APs this year, and summer CS activities, and programs games as a hobby. His heart is set on UIUC, but we shall see. Was hoping for a nice early admission to UMN to get him pumped up for it. I’ll look again at Iowa/Iowa State though, since we have a little time.

Did he emphasize his sports commitment and injuries when he applied to UM-TC or others. That is a big factor because of the time commitment.

It is still early in the game at UM-TC. He may get admitted soon. He will not get the IS tuition waiver due to class rank so Tuition/R&B will be about $28K/year.

Does he want to do Computer Science or Computer Engineering?

Here is a good site that ranks Engineering Programs; you can sort by Degree level, i.e. bachelors, masters, PHD on right down the page (pick field first):

http://best-engineering-colleges.com/computer-engineering/bachelor

ISU is #18 for Bachelors and #9 Masters; UM-TC is 48, 7; UIUC is 4, NR; Purdue 5, NR; OSU 2, 5.

Looking at these rankings and considering that a good Masters program is important to undergrad ed, I think the best choice is OSU (close to you) followed by ISU (maybe too far) and then UM-TC.

@ Ohio State he would get merit scholarship of $11,400 bringing Tuition/R&B to $27,630. Way less than UIUC would be for sure.

Thanks so much…he has applied to OSU, PSU, GT, Purdue, and a couple of reaches. I have a spreadsheet going of rankings (USN, Shanghai, business insider), although it’s harder finding for pure computer science (he is a programming kind of guy, no interest in taking any more of the hardware classes than he has to). Essay discusses his decision to quit football/sports after concussions to allow him to focus on school. His class rank is a real downer because otherwise he’s a good candidate for most programs, with demonstrated ability in CS. The games he’s programmed have had more than 2,000,000 players. Oh well, lessons learned for S#2-4…

I wish your son lots of luck. Hard to quit sports for sure and he seems very bright and mature to me!
