Admitted Students Day, what is it like? What about for parents?

Hi, my D18 will be attending an Admitted Students Day soon at UMD. We’re wondering what it will be like. I will be bringing her and I’m also wondering if I will be out of place or if parents are allowed to tag along. I don’t want my kid to be the only one there with a parent, lol.

Also, are there other days my D18 should to attend? She is also in the Honors College and the Engineering program and I wonder if there are separate days for any of those? I know there will be orientations in the summer.

We are in-state but it’s far enough that I’m not going to drop her off and go home.

One thing I know is that parking will probably be a nightmare. I already accidentally got a ticket the last time we went down there :wink:

You definitely won’t be out of place. There are tons of parents – tons of people in general. When we did it with my daughter they had us all meet for an introduction and then depart for smaller meetings by school, so business, engineering, arts and sciences, etc. There was also a panel and introduction about the Honors College with the director of the program and some student representatives. Was very informative. There were campus tours, too. When we went they directed us to parking garage near the football stadium and we parked for free. Hope this helps!

@Mom213 yes very helpful!

My D showed me the schedule…seems like some of the times overlap (like Honors and Engineering) but we’ll try to formulate a plan.

Good to know I won’t be the only parent there!

Absolutely not a problem - they only separate parents/students at orientation. At admitted students, it helps to have an extra ear because your D will be listening for different types of things than you will. There is also an engineering preview program which has not yet been updated with this year’s dates (they are late to set the date every year and it drives me batty) but it is an outstanding program https://eng.umd.edu/preview-program-registration

We both plan to go with DD to orientation since we did the same with DS16 at his school a few years ago. Most students seemed to arrive with parents at his, and I expect this one will be similar. I think parents and students pick up different information during the event. For DS16, he had already connected with other new students through social media, so he met up with some of them fur lunch and we are separately with DD18 (she came, too).

Is there a more detailed schedule for the event than what was originally posted? We want to catch the scholars season and her college/major session if we can.

Did youall download the terplife app? Its got the full schedule and you can sign up for sessions. Lots of stuff going on! There are college sessions, honors and scholars sessions and all kind of events. Hope theres a band and a turtle.

I definitely recommend going. You will not be out of place.

Thanks @klbmom18 I didn’t realize they had one but will download it now and share with DD so she can do the same.

D got a red mailer and i think theres a thing to scan on it too.

There are actually two Engineering Preview sessions scheduled for admitted students (not well advertised) on March 29th and April 5th during the evening. The registration page is on the Admitted Student tab on the Undergraduate Recruitment and Scholarship Program page of the College of engineering.

@Astro77 @mommahawk @WilliamNYC Please note @CU1986 comment #9 - I HIGHLY recommend going to an Engineering Preview session!

Thanks @maryversity and @CU1986 ! We signed up!

I really enjoyed it as a parent. We are OOS so we had to drive my daughter up for it anyways.
