Admitted Students Day

If I register to attend admitted students day, does that mean I’ve decided to enroll in the university? Or can I go to find out more information and then make a decision?

It usually just means that you have decided to go for another visit to check it out on a day/overnight when they are really trying to put their best foot forward. This is no problem going to these for more than one school, and you are under no obligation to give any of them your decision prior to May 1. It is a good idea to go to them at your top 2-3 choices if you can… one of my kids changed her mind after accepted students visits, and is really glad she went (happy sophomore now).

The admitted students visit is always before the May 1 deadline so the student can get more information before decision. Very often, they may even have a counter set up there if you decide to pay the deposit right there. So it is up to you if you want to commit to that school at that time or not.

The purpose of admitted students day is of course to encourage you to come. As an applicant they want you to apply, but as a student with an offer, they really want you to take it up (conversion ratios count in USNWR rankings). It is not uncommon for people to not visit every college they apply to (esp ones that are farther away, or are 2nd choice to a bigger name), and then go see them once they have a place.

We had a similar experience as intparent: D2 was torn, and the visits gave her clarity (also now a v happy sophomore). It was also interesting talking to other families- the overlap between the colleges that were on our short list and theirs was very high. One of the colleges was giving college stuff (sweatshirts, I think) to people who paid their deposits on the day.

Go with a clear conscience!
