Admitted Students Day

It’s on Tuesday, April 7. Is anyone going? D has never seen the campus (our Boston college tour last year ended with a snowstorm that closed the school), and is undecided about where to attend, so this sounds like a good opportunity to get a sense of the place, stay overnight, meet with Theater Dep’t faculty and students–and miss a few of days of school. But she could also go on a weekend for just the normal tour, and not miss any school. I wonder if these admitted students events are really worthwhile or amount to less than meets the eye.

at just about any school, admitted student day is going to be the school putting forward their best to convince the admitted students to come – there’ll be enthusiastic students and faculty members. there will probably flowers that aren’t usually there. it is a sales pitch – more so than even the regular admissions tour and info session – but the opportunities are there to see a lot.

my student was admitted ED so we didn’t go – but we knew other students who did, had a great time and paid their deposit that very day.

if you visit on a weekend you will be less likely to be able to speak with faculty members, sit in on classes or in general just see what the place is like on a class day. college campuses in general can be pretty quiet places on the weekend.
admitted students day won’t be a “typical” day because it will be admitted students day  – but you’ll probably see more than you would on a weekend.
of course if you can’t go to admitted students day, a weekend visit is better than no visit.

Definitely try to see the school “in action” during a weekday. It’s the interaction of the students among themselves, with faculty in the classroom, and, with respect to theater in particular, in the theater dept and the UTC productions, that makes Brandeis such an exciting place.

From your reference to your past BC visit, I’m not clear if BC is one of of your D’s current choices. If so, here’s a relevant thread from this site with food for thought if you haven’t seen it: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/660439-bc-vs-brandeis.html?highlight=brandeis+versus+boston+college</a></p>

Good luck with your decision!

MommaJ, as a Brandeis student who has hosted several prospective students, I would highly recommend your daughter attend the programs, and, more importantly, stay overnight. when you stay overnight, you get to experience the real Brandeis and have students tell your their honest feelings in a casual and unbiased way.

Thanks everyone-you’ve convinced us!

B77, I actually meant a visit to various Boston colleges, not a “Boston College” visit. BC was never on D’s radar screen. She is now comparing Brandeis to musical theater programs at American U (where she also got into Honors) and Muhlenberg. Brandeis is clearly the most selective and prestigious (money offers were comparable), but she needs to explore whether its solely student-run musicals will give her what she’s looking for. She is also attracted to the chance to minor or double major in Communications at the other schools. But then, there’s only one Boston. It’s like comparing apples, oranges and pineapples!

MommaJ - congrats on your D’s great options! it was my D’s overnight visit that convinced her to apply ED to Brandeis. like sulsk says, she really felt like she saw the “real Brandeis.” good luck with the decision making :)

mommaj, a group of faculty at at Brandeis are planning to construct a Communications, Media and Society major, there are still a few issues that need to be cleared up before its approval, but I’d say it’s likely to be completed once your daughter is enrolled:

Very interesting, catperson247, thank you! Another ingredient to throw into the bubbling pot of indecision!

D will definitely do an overnight. Any recommendations for reasonably priced place for me to stay that evening and a nice restaurant where I can be comfortable dining alone? (I’ve had to do this at several other colleges where D did overnights–it’s a drag.)

MommaJ–in addition to the five undergraduate shows each semester , which are very good, undergrads can perform in Brandeis Theater Company shows. When I worked backstage on a BTC show two years ago (for my intro to theater class), two undergrads had the leading parts. here’s a youtube video about the BTC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GnC1u5LfJM</a>

since there aren’t that many hotel rooms in Waltham, there might not be good deals left but when my parents visit for just a night, they stay at the Holiday Inn Express [Holiday Inn Express WALTHAM Hotels | BOSTON-WALTHAM | Welcome](http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ex/1/en/hotel/wtmma)

As for dining, you’d probably feel comfortable at eating at several of the more casual restaurants on moody street like upper crust or baan thai

hope this helps.

For those of you who are visiting our campus (either on Admitted Students Day or any other time) here’s a link to a section of our website that gives information about where to stay, what to eat, etc.

Also, on Admitted Students Day, we’ll have a bunch of dining guides and maps of Waltham available to give out. Furthermore, if you run into me on campus, I’d be glad to give you recommendations of my favorite places to eat in Waltham. There are a ton of great restaurants and you can’t go wrong with most of them.

Mommaj, my daughter is a first year student and very involved with theater. Feel free to PM me if you would like more information. The opportunities with undergraduate theater are plentiful.

You should also be aware, if you want to visit Brandeis during April at a time other than Admitted Students Day, that spring break is set to coincide with Passover, so students will have vacation April 9-16. BTW, for Jewish students, one lovely aspect to Brandeis is you never have to worry about classes on the Jewish holidays!
