First, congrats to all recently admitted EA and ED students. I am a college counselor in NJ and the mom of a 2017 Tulane graduate…roll wave! So, a little bit about Tulane and merit $$…Historically, Tulane has been very generous with merit $. However, beginning last year, Tulane has moved away from this a bit and is focusing more on financial need in an effort to increase diversity. (I will post a link to an article from the Tulane Hullabaloo at the end of this post). So, for those of you who were expecting more, and for next year’s applicants, I think that it would be helpful if you all could post your stats (Accepted/GPA/SAT/ACT/merit award amount$$). Thanks. And congrats again - welcome to the Tulane family (it’s amazing! https://tulanehullabaloo.com/44695/news/money-matters-tulane-reduces-merit-aid-budget-increases-need-based-financial-aid-spending/

She also applied for both the DHS and PT. We understand that they are extremely competitive scholarships but does the level of merit given initially indicate her chances are slim to none for DHS or PT since she didn’t get “distinguished” or “presidential”? She loves Tulane and while we feel genuinely lucky that she got accepted, we will not be able to afford it with the merit received. I tried to look at past awards winners and didn’t find any founders that have won, only distinguished.
Curious if the large merit was ED or EA?
My D’s was EA
4.0 UW/4.33 W, 33 ACT, Founder’s Scholarship (24,000/yr)
@gratefulmama We are in the same boat–same stats, same merit award, Honors College and just hoping for a chance at PT or Community Service, otherwise it’s a no go. My D was EA as well.
@type1mom - Guess we’ll wait and see what happens. Good luck to your D!

Even though she has received a full tuition offer elsewhere, and is a semi-finalist and finalist for full-ride and/or full-tuition scholarships at several top 25 schools, she really thought Tulane was the one. Back to the drawing board because we don’t qualify for merit aid and rather than try to appeal she’s going to have faith in following the direction in which life is pointing her.
Funny thing is, both of our girls really wanted to go to Tulane - but for some reason Tulane didn’t see in them what other schools do. This process has been such a surprise. Luckily, having been through this a few times, we know that somehow students end up exactly where they are meant to be.
@WillowMom – You should be very proud of the offers made to your D from other schools, and I hope you both understand that it’s not that Tulane thought your daughters were lacking anything. We don’t know what goes on behind the scenes with admissions. They have way more qualified applicants than they can admit (and give generous merit to); maybe you are from Nebraska and they already took in 100 students from Nebraska ED and filled their quota, who knows? Honestly when you have high scores and all other things are pretty equal, some of this is luck.
The concept of “dream school” is some figment that is built up in everyone’s head. The full tuition offer and graduating with no debt is the REAL dream! Your D is obviously very intelligent and will thrive and be happy outside of Tulane.
@AH1310 - you are a dream. I just sent your post to my D because although I couldn’t agree more, it’s more believable coming from someone who is not your mother, and she needed that today. Thanks.
Received some Merit Aid - ED2 - without applying for any of it. A pleasant surprise, as none was expected and stats were good, but not anything near perfect.
