For those families who intend to participate in the Admitted Students Weekend at Pomona College, let’s chat here to make the most of our time together on that weekend. Maybe if we got to know each other better first on this forum, we’ll get more out of our weekend when we meet. Who knows, if our DD’s and DS’s end up matriculating at Pomona, we’ll be Pomona families together! First of all, does anyone know when the Admitted Students Weekend will take place? We can’t wait to attend as a family and explore the Claremont College consortium. Hope to see you there.
Congratulations on your child’s acceptance! The admitted student days are on Monday April 11th and Monday April 18th- registration starts in the morning and the day is packed with events throughout. I would also strongly recommend that he or she sign up for an overnight stay, which they can do through their portal.

Thank you so much! We are most eager to participate. Hope to meet other families there too. We might be Admitted Families for the next four years together.
Our DS2 has been accepted to Pomona and my wife and I intend to attend admitted students weekend. Is the admitted students weekend includes Saturday, Sunday and Monday or just that particular day, April 11th or April 18th? We are in Pacific NW and need to make arrangements for our flights and hotel stay in Clairmont.
It’s just on Monday for most students. Some are invited to a Spring Diversity Weekend for underrepresented students, but you would know if you were invited through the portal.
I highly recommend staying for a few extra days though and looking at what LA has to offer A lot of really cool places to check out. You could do public transport but I’d recommend renting a car for the weekend (traffic isn’t too bad). If you need any suggestions or help please feel free to PM me.
GreatNWdad, Congratulations to your son’s admission to Pomona College. The Admitted Student Day is just the one day of 11 or 18th of April. However, your son might wish to participate in the overnight stay program on either the evening prior or evening of the Admitted Student Day event. Ours will stay the Sunday evening with a current Pomona student and the continue with the Admitted Student Day on Monday.
Thanks Redpandabear, I am also thinking about the same. My son can stay overnight on Sunday and we attend Monday session. Now we have to decide if it is going to be April 11 or the 18. We had been to So Cal many times in the past and I do visit So Cal on business couple times a year. It is a great place. Pomona is definitely on my son’s shortlist now even though we are waiting for few other decisions within next couple of weeks.
Any idea of how long the admitted students day will be? I am going to book our flights today and it would be helpful to know when I can schedule my return flight. Will it be over by 4 PM and we can leave Pomona by 5 PM? Depending on the traffic, my guess is that I can be at Ontario airport by 6 PM?
For what it’s worth, here’s a link to a post I did about last year’s schedule: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/18364658/#Comment_18364658. It was officially over at 4:30 pm but the last part was a departmental fair on Stover Walk with tables set up for each department, staffed with flyers and someone to answer questions. It would’ve been very easy to leave at 4 pm if you wanted.
Thanks Corinthian. This is very helpful.
@Redpandabear any suggestions on what to do for those coming on a Sunday? the admissions dpt said they could find a student for S to stay overnight on Sunday but really didn’t offer suggestions on anything to do on campus on Sunday afternoon. When S looked at events going on at Pomona Sunday and also the Consortium Sunday didn’t appear much happening on campus. I believe he meets up with his host student for dinner Sunday night but looking for suggestions on what to do on Sunday when he arrives on campus around 1pm.
@momof2eagles Sunday is usually cram day for college students so there shouldn’t be a lot going on except for studying. I would recommend either checking out the 5Cs campus + the village or taking the train to LA and explore the city.
I would second @PKMGSoledad suggestion about wandering around the 5Cs and the village (but probably not enough time to head into LA if you’re coming to town at 1p). I would also recommend checking out the Choir and Orchestra concert at 3pm: https://www.pomona.edu/events/pomona-college-choir-and-orchestra-0. It’s free, and even if you guys aren’t into Brahms, you’ll get to hang out in “Little Bridges” (if you sit on the second floor it’s easy to slip out if you need to). It’s one of the most beautiful buildings on the 5Cs, and will be where the newest Sagehens gather for their first official college event after they dump their parents on move-in day.
@otisp and @PKMGSoledad thx for advice. I also saw art museum was open.
Evidently someone who was there this weekend posted a screenshot of the weekend agenda to the Pomona Class of 2020 Admits Facebook page. It looks like there are various things going on on Sunday - a Brunch, alumni panel discussion, etc. - maybe drop in on those things?
We’re going to be there (S and myself) - and at least part of the time will be accompanied by at least one current Pomona student, too. We might check out the concert that @otisp mentioned, too. S isn’t staying overnight on campus, but will be there all day on Monday.
will have S check the FB page. when i called admissions they didnt seem to know anything about scheduled events on Sunday only Monday a full day of scheduled events. they did say for kids getting host students they could meet the student around dinner time. They didnt seem to be aware of alumni brunches on Sunday or other events on Sunday.
Hm… curious, @momof2eagles. I’ll ask S to pull it up again when he’s home, but that’ll be pretty late tonight. In any case, I expect we’ll mostly be around. Not doing the hosted visit since S already knows the place fairly well and has friends there. If he were to have the afternoon off, i’d probably suggest heading into the Village to see a movie, walk around, get frozen yogurt (I think the weather’s supposed to be in the 80s). Those are our biggest concerns anyway - can our city kid survive the suburbs. (He doesn’t drive.)
thx @2manybooks I will ask S to do the same. maybe the extended weekend activities were for the multicultural admit days. I believe the RD admit days only have scheduling for Monday with hosting Sunday night so I think he will meet his host around dinner time.
@momof2eagles and @2manybooks There might be some confusion about the Admit Day events which start Sunday and continue in earnest on Monday and the Spring Weekend which starts on Saturday and end on Tuesday. The latter is an invite-only event for under-represented students, I believe. What I would do if we had a free Sunday afternoon is to focus on meeting people on the 5C campus and learning their perspective. I would not spend the precious time visiting Los Angeles or even the local town because getting candid testimony from students, faculty, and staff is priceless. From our visits to many colleges this past year, I have found that the combination of formal presentations, student and faculty panels, and candid conversations is the best way to learn about college. We have been doing our homework and will make the most of our short time on the 5C campus.
We have close family in Los Angeles and in fact lived there for many years. If anyone on this thread would like some info regarding Los Angeles, feel free to PM me. Some of the facets of Los Angeles we like and dislike are as follows:
Likes:
- The incredible diversity of cultures, ethnicities, ideologies and lifestyles and the sense of tolerance of same. Many interesting ethnic enclaves to enjoy.
- The increasingly attractive downtown area. The new Broad modern art museum is just the latest in a string of cultural developments that draw people to downtown LA. The Getty museums (one along the Pacific Coast and the other overlooking a bluff near Bel Aire are spectacular and free. I visit them everytime I visit LA.
- The incredible diversity of beaches from Venice in the north, to Manhattan beach, to Laguna beach in the south. Refugio beach is very affordable and right on the beach for camping.
- The entertainment juggernaut…er if you like that sort of thing. My van drove through Hollywood Blvd and Mann’s Chinese Theater everyday to work so I’ve become calloused to Hollywood.
- The splendid Pasadena renaissance. What used to be boarded up downtown detritus is now a lovely area filled with bars, restaurants, coffee shops, museums, etc.
- The dry, warm, sunny weather year round. Never had to deal with mosquitoes or black mold when living there.
- Foodie Heaven. So much variety at such affordable prices. My favorite is the Noodle World chain. Over 200 items.
- Vibrant broad-based economy. Downtown LA is home to branch offices to so many elite global firms.
- Great colleges: UCLA, USC, Occidental, Pepperdine (nearby in Malibu), Art Center College of Design, etc.
Dislikes:
- Endless suburban sprawl. One community blends into the next without notice. Ugly, cheap, stucco pod-malls everywhere.
- Traffic congestion and smog. The LA basin traps smog. Dearth of public transport.
- Expensive real-estate and gasoline.
- Drought, fire-danger, mudslide danger.
