My D was accepted to and is considering Cal Poly, however we have never been to the campus. We plan on making a trip there to help determine if it is the right school for her. When do the rest of you plan to visit? We will go either during my D’s spring break in early April or to the open house April 18-20

Also…if anyone has any tips about flying there from the PNW, I would appreciate it.

I have two kids at Cal Poly. If at all possible, I would go Open House weekend. They do a great job giving the prospective students a taste of campus life and the prospective major.

^universityfreak…thank you for your recommendation. I was planning on going earlier than that, but if you think it will give a fair representation of the campus, it may be worth waiting for. Do your kids need to fly there, or are you within driving distance. It is not possible to take a non-stop flight from our city and the cost is much more than I would have expected given the distance. In some cases, she would be able to fly to the east coast for less money and time, but if Cal Poly school is the right place to be, the flights will not be factored into the equation.

For us it is about a 4 hour drive. With my older son, we went up twice. He accepted the offer and paid his housing fee after the first visit and was impressed by the school at that time. Although we toured the campus the first time we went up, they did not have the housing and department tours/demonstrations, social functions, parent coffee, etc. that they had during open house. That made him far more confident in his decision. What major did your daughter get into?

She was accepted into Agribusiness, but is already having second thoughts and wants to transfer into traditional business. What are your kids studying?

DS was accepted this week so we took a little road trip up there this weekend and we just got back (we also live about 4 hrs away). We did a self guided tour with the iPhone app since it was a Saturday (and we had our dog with us My son liked the campus and the students we encountered were very friendly. One kid stopped to help us because we looked lost! The new rec center is amazing–it was a sunny day and kids were laying out by the pool like it was a resort. We went to dinner in town last night–Woodstock Pizza. It was packed with students and really lively. SLO seems like a great college town. Definitely moved up on his list after our visit. But from the above posts, it sounds like it would be worth going back up for Open House.

My older one is studying electrical engineering and my younger son is studying industrial technology in the school of business. My older son’s roommate is an agribusiness major. From what I have heard it is a great major at Cal Poly. Open House would be the best time to check it out. Congrats to your daughter. It is a fantastic school and a great college town.

I visited last year during the Summer. I liked the campus. I’m thinking about going to both Open House (April 18-20) and Soar (Mid July-August).

I agree that Open House is a good time to visit. The weather is usually very nice and you can get a good flavor of the campus by talking to the students who are manning their booths.

One flight option that might work for you is to fly into San Jose and rent a car for the 3-hour drive to San Luis. I’m not sure where you are in the PNW, but I see nonstop flights for $200 round trip from Seattle to SJC on Southwest.

Thank you for all of your responses. I will probably delay our planned visit during my D’s spring break and head to SLO in mid-April for the Open House.
