I just got notification of my acceptance to UIUC. I applied as as a Communication major, in the News-Editorial (Journalism) program. When I looked to see if I was accepted to this program, I was told that I was admitted to an alternate program.
My application data on their website currently appears like this:

Application Data
Decision: Admit - Alternate Choice
Application Type: Priority Admission
Student Type: Freshman
Major: Communication
College: Liberal Arts & Sciences
Term: Fall 2012

I don't remember what I chose as an alternate choice. So, what program was I admitted to?

I think I know what that means, but the best thing to do would be to just call the university, haha. Now what I believe this means is that you were admitted to the DGS (Division of General Studies) program. That’s the program for undeclared majors and, what I think is in your case, for admitted students who were not competitive enough for the specific program to which they applied (usually happens to people applying to engineering programs here). Not to worry, though, once you are here you can transfer to your major of interest. I’m not sure if you can do it immediately or would have to wait until a certain period of time (like 1 year) to do it. Just call the university up.
