Admitted to Cornell, waitlisted by MIT

My son was admitted to Cornell and waitlisted by his other dream-college (MIT). He will hear from MIT in mid-May only.

Will accepting Cornell's offer of admission as requested May 1 result in obligation to attend Cornell even if later MIT accepts him from wait-list?

Anyone else is in the similar situation, please?

No. You will lose your deposit but can otherwise pull out of cornell without a problem.

Just be sure to pull out of Cornell before mid-August or you will lose a portion of any tuition you may have paid.

My son is waitlisted at Princeton and admitted to Cornell for engineering, we need to get on the 12 month installment plan for tuition payments and therefore, we will have possibly made one or two payments before we find out from Princeton. As long as he withdraws before mid-August, we will get all payments back except for the $400 deposit (and $80 set-up fee for the installment plan.)

Thank you, both.

Is there a defined mechanism of “pulling out” from school, please? Just a letter or an email will suffice?

I believe that would work. I would call the admissions department, just because then they will be able to answer your questions. I know some people have been able to get their deposit back, too. I think you should do both, because it is always nice to have something in writing.
