Hi I will be attending Calso next week and am wondering if any current students or students in my major could advise me on which classes I should be signing up for if I intend to have a neurobiology focus in M&C Bio. The whole process is very new to me and any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!

All caps mean you are shouting.

I would like advising too (same major)! This whole process is indeed perplexing.

You should take Math 1A and Chem 1A and 1AL plus one or two electives that you chose. If you feel weak in your chemistry background, you can do bio 1B in place of Chem 1A for your first semester and take Chem 1A in the spring

<a href=“New Freshmen Q&A | Molecular and Cell Biology”>http://mcb.berkeley.edu/undergrad/advising/advising-office/freshmen/ will probably be helpful to you.

MCB accepts AP chemistry score of 4 in place of Chemistry 1A/1AL, but if you are considering skipping, try the old final exams at <a href=“Chemistry 1A - Tau Beta Pi, California Alpha Chapter”>https://tbp.berkeley.edu/courses/chem/1A/ to check your knowledge.

I know theres the option to take Math 1A or 10A, but I’m not sure which i should take… Any suggestions?

1A-1B is a typical frosh calculus course.

10A-10B is a specialized course covering various math topics most applicable to biology and medicine.

If you are considering other majors that accept 1A-1B but not 10A-10B, or intend to take courses like Physics 7A, Math 53 or 54, etc. that list 1A-1B but not 10A-10B as acceptable prerequisites, then take 1A-1B (but you may also want to take an additional statistics course). Otherwise, 10A-10B will cover just the math and statistics most applicable to biology and medicine, although some students may not like the quick changing of topics involved.

10B also covers one third of math 54 and quite a bit of math 55. Overall, the 10 series for math is FAST PACED, more so than the math 1 series. I took Math 10A-10B but I have compared homeworks, exams to those in the 1 series and the 10 series is MUCH more rigorous in terms of the pure amounts of techniques and problems to learn. I wrote a thread about this here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/1644563-important-advice-for-any-freshmen-intended-life-sciences-majors-for-math-requirements.html
