bball: O_O.

The Northwestern news just got a lot better. Financial aid came. They are offering me $35k in scholarships and grants!!!!!!!! It's absolutely unbelievable. My Northwestern efc was $3000... That's about $3k lower than my fafsa score!

Estimated Cost of Attendance: $47,637
Expected Family Contribution: $3,000
Demonstrated Financial Need: $44,637

Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan: $3,500
Federal Perkins Loan: $4,000
Northwestern Scholarship: $28,837
Federal SEOG: $3,500
Federal Pell Grant: $2,600
Federal Work Study: $2,200

So... Chicago is still my first pick, but do you guys think they are going to match such an insane aid package? I'm poor and even though I love UChicago, if they don't give me comparable aid, I don't see how I can turn down NU's offer.

So, to answer your question neverborn.... It all depends on the aid at this point.

And thanks for the congrats, Tdog!

that is a sensational package. congrats! :]

bball, i would pick NU over chicago also. good luck with penn tomorrow though, hehe.

Seriously...damn. Congrats johnM. Too bad international transfers like me can't expect anything.

Wow! Looks like all of your hard work is finaly paying off, John. I don't see how you can turn that down. I would go ahead and start booking flights. I just appealed to Loyola for more aid - they offered about 6k on 38k in estimated costs. What some colleges don't seem to understand with us ind. students is that we have to leave our jobs to go to these schools, meaning last year's income becomes irrelevant. Either way, I will figure out a way to pay for it, hopefully at Northwestern.

JohnM, i think i am taking northwestern at FULL price over chicago, i think u would be a fool to go to chicago unless they match or give u a better package

Northwestern is AMAZING, attractive students, fun social life...big 10 sports

Hey JohnM,

I guess you will start as a sophomore if you go to NU. Will you be able to skip the whole "engineering first" and just follow the traditional curriculum?

Yeah, luckily NU seems to have taken into account that I won't be able to make what I make now when I arrive on campus. That's probably why they lowered my EFC below what FAFSA estimates.

I work full time now, which I can manage with my less rigorous community college curriculum. But I doubt I could work full time and keep up with NU's rigor (especially since I applied to Engineering). This aid package will definitely allow me to concentrate on my studies. Of course, I'll work too... otherwise, I'd probably just get lazy. :D But at least I won't have to work full time. That's just awesome.

bball, that's essentially what my condition is. It's all about the aid at this point. So, unless Chicago beats or comes very close to NU's aid (very doubtful), I'll probably end up in Evanston. But all things equal, I'd prefer UChicago simply because I'm more interested in the life of the mind than big 10 sports. :P

I have no idea. When I talked to them about whether I would be a sophomore or not, they said you don't arrive as a transfer into a certain class. I honestly didn't really understand what the guy was talking about. I don't know how I would fit into their "engineering first" philosophy.

They haven't done my credit eval yet either, but since I'm at a cc, I doubt they will transfer much.

sam lee, i am into Wash U and Northwestern and UChicago right now, i know u transfered from Wash U

if u could do things over, would u transfer to northwestern again from Wash U?

JohnM: I think you'd be a fool to take Northwestern over UChicago if you get comparable aid. UChicago offered me 21k in free money on an efc of like 18000. Keep up hope.

johnM,

You should find that out as that's very important. Have you got a chance to look at what engineering first curriculum entails? It's unique to NU. Do you actually plan to study engineering, considering UChicago doesn't offer any but it's one of your top choices.

bball,

Yes, and I would pursue econ/industrial engineering instead as I am flirting with the idea of going into finance field. Having a big10 football to follow is an added bonus. It was fun to watch the Sun Bowl (vs UCLA) with about 60 other wildcats at a sports bar/restaurant in Los Angeles (didn't realize there were many wildcats in southern cal).

Sam Lee,

Are you at Northwestern?

I looked at the Engineering First curriculum, and it looks like it would provide a really solid foundation. Even though I've already taken Differential Equations and Linear Algebra, I've never even used matlab.

Do you think I would lag behind the other engineering students without the Engineering First background? I will definitely talk to NU about this. Thanks for the heads up.

As for my apparent engineering contradiction (since I applied to Chicago), I actually applied as an engineer everywhere except Chicago. I plan on engineering, but if Chicago gives me a shot, I would go as a math major. I actually like pure math better, but I need to worry about my career options. But if there is one place to do pure math.... Chicago's where it's at!

BTW, do you know anything about McCormick's Applied Math major? It looks sort of tasty... It seems sort of like a combo between an applied math and engineering education. I wonder about the career options though.

I was accepted as an Electrical Engineer, btw.

Yeah, that is pretty amazing... So who knows?

crap turns out i'm getting no aid, and my family will have to pay for all of it...sheez...how are the financial aid packages for the rest of you guys?

bump............

has anyone else who applied to WSAS and didn't force a decision heard back yet? I'm sure someone has, I'm too lazy to search for it though.

yeah, i never received anything yet as well, but i was wondering to those accepted if they came in fedex packages cause i had a friend who transferred two years ago receive a fedex package

No. It was regular mail.

i haven't heard back yet, according to this website: https://ugadm.northwestern.edu/application/ my application was completed on May 16.
