admitted today with lower stats than normally posted on CC

whatup people. i'm new to college confidential (although i have occasionally skimmed threw forums before). i was admitted into michigan ann arbor today and i've seen a lot of people freaking out about their stats. and honestly, their stats were way better than mine. so, for an inspirational story, here are my stats:

LSA admit for fall 2006

GPA/Classes:
UW:3.45 (i don't know how michigan's gpa system works)
W: 4.11
APs taken/have taken (scores):
Eng Lit
Eng Comp (4)
Bio (4)
US History (5)
US Government
Macroeconomics
Calculus AB
Statistics
(they have IB at my school, but i transferred to my public school from the best prep school in central florida in the middle of my junior year and was unable to join the IB program. yeah, as in the middle of 2nd semester of my junior year).

SAT stuff:
M:700
CR:700
W:740
US history: 680
Math 2: 690

Race: Hispanic/Asian
EC's:
- varsity tennis 7-12 (starter every year)
top 35 section ranking in tennis juniors (i'm from florida so my section is tough) in 2003; top 350 national ranking in tennis juniors in 2003
- national merit hispanic scholar finalist
- national merit commended scholar
- forensics (debate/speech) national rank of 48 (i do extemp for all you forensics kids out there); i have been on the national circuit since late 9th grade and been to tons of national tournys
- interned with a state senator and peer mentored and tutored underprivilaged kids for community service (CS only totaled about 50 or so hours, i think less)
- went to penn summer precollege (doesn't really do anything but hey i went)

i think that's pretty much it. my essays were solid, my recs were solid, and i applied late (i think around 1/23/2006, not really sure) and i was notified today (i was never deferred). i don't have any national honor societies, i'm out of state (florida), i applied late, i have never shown any interest to michigan (i applied on a last minute whim) and i hope my story and stats give a boost of confidence for a lot of kids here. maybe i'm a mistake; who knows. all i know is, i'm psyched, and i hope my admission helps some people's egos around here as well as calm some people down.

Dearkonstantine, your stats aren't lower than normal. You got a 2140 on your SAT and a bunch of 4s and 5s on your APs. Clearly, your school grades more harshly than other schools, and Michigan certainly looks at that, so perhaps your unweighed GPA is lower than the Michigan norm, but everything else checks out.

Congratulations on your acceptance. Hopefully, you will be joining the Wolverine club!

well, my gpa has been a liability (although my high school is the best public school in my area and the areas surrounding my city). i've just seen many kids who ask if they'll get in with higher SAT scores than mine and better grades and people reply to them telling them that it'll be super tough for them (especially if they applied late). i just wanted to show people here that you can still get in applying very late, out of state, with a mediocre gpa.

you are way off your stats are NOT lower than most by any stretch. My cousin got in last year and stats well below and yours are WAY better and stronger than hers, don't know where you got that info, any way Congrats!

LOL, a 2140 on the SAT. What an "inspiration"! I know I can get in now! lol

well most people on CC who were worrying about admissions had at least my SAT scores. and probably .4 more on their unweighted gpa.

personally i think many of the stats reported seem almost inflated OR represent the higher tip of the scale. My cousin who is in Michigan got far less than you did and my brother is at Harvard and did not get perfect scores on everything he took!!
