My son had a great time at ADOCH. I wondered if anyone else had any comments – or questions about it if you couldn’t make it.

I will be happy to answer any also. I was there even though i wasnt technically suppose to be (Early Decision).

I thought ADOCH was very well run and organized and really convince RDers to go. I talked to quite a few admits and said they were coming to Brown after their ADOCH experiences. For me personally i had a very good time. Im not too fond of A cappella group which they kinda overdid for me but overall was amazing.

Haha if you come to Brown you will learn to love a cappella groups. There’s kind of nothing weirder or more wonderful than walking home cranky from the library and happening upon a dozen guys in suspenders belting out Disney or hits of the '90s along to choreographed dance moves. And then there’s the pirates, Arrr! cappella, who will tunelessly serenade you with truly filthy sea shanties.

Obviously not everyone cares about a cappella groups, and you certainly don’t need to, but they’re sort of indicative of what it’s like here: all these people are amazingly, unabashedly dorky, and are embraced by the rest of Brown for it.

I made it through five years here and still think a cappella is lame. I also thought their presence at ADOCH and during orientation was especially lame. My first-year roommate and I largely bonded on how lame we thought a cappella is.

YES! YES! YES! Thank you modestmelody for providing me with company! I am in the saaaammmeee boat as you! I absolutely HATE a cappella and I find it soooo corny. Obviously, I’m in the minority though. It seems like ALL of my friends either love it and/or are in it! It’s funny because I never really had an opinion of it before coming to college–in fact, I was actually looking forward to seeing the concerts, but seriously, after about one weekend of acappella, I was ready to cut my ears off.

Found it interesting how ADOCH people used a cappella to lure pre-frosh…it was precisely this tactic used by Amherst which turned me away, running.

My daughter’s comments about the a capella groups last year related to the lyrics some chose-- that gave her a glimpse of some of the freedom and variety of humor at Brown.

A capella and ultimate frisbee seem to be big on many college campuses. Maybe a bit lame, but fun for the participants.

I am usually not very intrigued by a capella, but wow - I have never seen more vocal talent than in those 15 minutes of performance by the Jabberwocks. Whether you like it or not, you still have to respect the effort and skill involved in it. Furthermore, I don’t understand how you felt overwhelmed by the performances considering they were fairly isolated to the two arches and there were so many other activities to immerse yourself in.

I am in total agreement with RoyalFlush. I usually like, not love, a capella, but the Jabberwocks actually brought a smile to my face. I thought they were incredibly talented.
