Adoch

What should we expect from ADOCH? There have been schedules and class lists and all, but from what I understand, it’s just basically a “free-for-all” of walking around campus, sampling foods etc. I mean, should I come to ADOCH with a clear schedule in mind of when I want to visit a class or an info-session etc… Or should I just let the wind blow and I’ll go wherever everyone else seems to go? Someone give me (and others) an idea of their ADOCH experience so we know what we should expect.

Matt, I hope you have a great time at ADOCH. I have to say it was really wonderful two years ago and very well organized, by students, by the way. My daughter went to stuff on her own (or with other kids) and I separated from her and went to other stuff and we met up at the end of it all. It also happened to be fantastic weather and everyone at Brown was out and about.

If I recall, my D had a schedule of things she wanted to do outlined in advance. Some were ADOCH specific events...sessions about things, performances, etc. Some were individual things she lined up on her own such as observing certain classes, meeting with a coach, meeting with someone in one of the EC areas she was interested in, meeting with a professor. But she definitely did many of the organized activities....I forget them all now but one was an activity fair, another was an academic dept. fair, another was a welcoming presentation with either deans or the Pres. and the students who ran ADOCH, and another was many performances at night that included a mix of sample groups...really great. Some were social events. I know she went out to dinner on Thayer St. with other pre-frosh she met as they were grouped to spend the night in a certain dorm. They spent time with each other, etc. I went to many parent oriented sessions. So, it wasn't like just roaming around. She fit in what she wanted to do from the array of offerings and then fit in individualized things she wanted to line up around the others, and then some times were just social in nature. It was a pretty full two days. At the end of the event, she made up her mind, "I'm going here!" and then did the bookstore rush for some logo items and the car decal along with EVERYONE else! :D

I know ADOCH starts on Wednesday. I'd have you meet up with my D but she is actually going down to NYC for the night to see Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden with my other D whom you know who is at NYU. She is hosting a prospective student from our region tonight and tomorrow, however. If I were you, I'd do as many or as few events in the ADOCH schedule that you wish...but many are very good...and also if there are any people you wish to meet up with, arrange that around the other events.

Have fun! It is REALLY happening, can you believe it?
Best,
Susan

Thanks so much Soozie :-) Can you believe how long it's been, since we first met and now this? And all we've talked about, it's nearing the end of my high school CC days... later to join facebook like all the other undergrads. But i'll still be an avid CC poster/reader of course.

Should I even bother with the info. sessions??, cause I heard some of the were BS, especially for kids like me who already know they're attending this school. ADOCH is for RD kids anyway who are undecided... for me it should be more of a chill time I assume.

what time is everyone getting there? is there just a gap of time between 4 and 10 where students come in and walk around? is that just the exploring time?

Well the train to Brown gets in at 4:30...from there we meet our hosts and i forget what else.

i live close by so i'm just driving, but i guess i'll be there around 4:30 if that's when everyone else is getting there.

I'll be flying in and getting there pretty late at night, I think.

who's taking the train??? because i might...

I'm flying and the shuttle is picking up at the airport at 12 in the afternoon.

I doubt that there are still tickets available for the train.

Oooh, sbroy who are you?

I'm also taking the shuttle at 12.
