Adopted... Hispanic? :D

The reason you find this odd is because you don’t comprehend that race is a biological term, whereas ethnicity is not, it is a complex social and cultural concept. That is why Hispanic ethnicity can be ‘adopted’, either by a child being adopted into a Hispanic family or by someone immigrating to a Hispanic country. Race is not something that can be adopted because it is biological and determined at birth.

I found this helpful, perhaps it will help you to understand the difference in these terms:

[Concepts of Diversity](http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/med/research/csri/ethnicityhealth/aspects_diversity/concepts/)

Just as biological children of Jewish parents could be adopted by Christians and brought up to be Christians, a child of any race can be brought up by Hispanic parents to be ethnically Hispanic.

Race on the other hand is biologically transmitted by the child’s biological parents. Adopting a child does not change it’s race.

ps: checking a box does not confer automatic advantage. The holistic admissions process is more complex than that.

Thanks everyone. I will refer the student I mentioned to this thread.
Much appreciation. Itsv
