Adroit Journal Summer Mentorship Program 2019 Thread

@wontonandrice thank you! i’ll reach out to adroit and see what they say - have a feeling it’s under 20%

does anyone know how much emphasis adroit places on the writing sample and the writer’s statement? i think my writer’s statement is strong, but my writing sample is really weak. i haven’t done much poetry, or even creative writing as a whole

@enaword I’m in the same boat as you. I really just started creative writing seriously this year. I think these programs will place the most weight on writing samples, so I wouldn’t really expect anything. Anyways, you’re already going to Kenyon, so you’ll be fine :).

@enaword I think adroit and iowa put the most emphasis on the sample out of all the camps but i think even adroit and iowa value a good story. that’s the route i went for my app

Does anybody know if Adroit is homophobic with its selection? I want to submit a poem about a girl but… yeah?

@insidewires (i think) the eic of the magazine is gay so definitely not lol

okay, so i applied last year and i have some theories about how they pick people? basically i think that they use the writer’s statement as an initial sweep before they send the samples to the individual mentors. from there, it’s more about how the mentors like your voice vs. your actual skill. i’m not ENTIRELY sure obviously, but i can guess because they basically told me that i had made it past their first round of selection, and looking back, my writer’s statement was a lot better than my samples, so i’m inferring that that’s how they do it? they also said that 400+ people applied, and they accepted 51, so if you assume around 450 people applied, then that’s an 11% acceptance rate rip

but congrats on getting close last year!! crossing my fingers for this year :slight_smile:

Does anybody know if being openly gay would decrease my chances?

@insidewires I don’t think so, a lot of their alums (Aidan Forster, Brynne Rebele-Henry, Jackson Neal, for example) are gay

@insidewires and yeah a google of the editor-in-chief suggest he’s gay https://www.poetrysociety.org/psa/poetry/crossroads/own_words/Peter_LaBerge/

Oh thank God

@insidewires Don’t worry, hun, I doubt being openly gay will decrease your chances at all. From what I’ve seen, the Adroit community seems to be very liberal-leaning and has a lot of LGBTQ staff/writers. Also, their editor-in-chief is gay, so i doubt they’d be homophobic, lol

Does anyone want to read over my personal statement? I know my writing is strong, but I honestly have zero idea how to make a solid personal statement. And since I’ve had pretty shoddy luck with summer writing program I have a feeling they need work

@wistfulwords i’m happy to if you want to share it with me :slight_smile:

Last year results came out on May 22 for me. Was it the same for everyone else?

@wistfulwords I’d also be willing too. I’m also a little unsure about mine though, would anyone be willing to read mine as well? I know it’s a bit late now.

@wontonandrice I’ll also read yours even though I’m not the best at writer’s statement :smiley:

how many words are you guys submitting? for prose, i’m scared my application is too short. they asked for 8-12 pages and i have 8 but with a biggish font size
