Ads on this site really annoying

I recently have found the ads on this site to be incredibly annoying. Seems there is always something on the bottom of the screen that I need to X out of for almost every page. It seems this is somewhat of a recent thing, but as I only seem to come here every few weeks, not exactly sure when this started. It’s to the point where I may stop coming here. Anyone else notice it?

Are you reading without logging in? If so, those ads will go away if you log in. You will still see some ads but not ones that cover the forum text.

@privateID

Yes…that seems to be it…thanks

Install an ad-blocking extension for your browser, or on a mobile device install an add-blocking browser. Your life will be much better.

I’m logged in and the ads don’t disappear. There’s a super annoying one that looks like flowers that comes in from both the left and right edges and blocks 2/3 of the screen for several seconds. Even CC isn’t worth that forced infringement on my time.

I’ve been having issues on and off all day with the ads blocking the threads, so much so that they can’t be read. I can’t seem to get mine to go away.

installing AdBlock Plus for your browser does the trick.

AdBlock is free, but you can make a donation. It works for me right now, no ads on this Mac Safari page.

If I’m logged in, I don’t get ads across the text on my iPad.

Maybe this is something they are fixing tomorrow morning in the redesign.

Ok…wishful thinking…but you gotta hope.

I’m logged in, and the right third of the screen is still occupied by a column with the stupid ad at the top. If you’re trying to make me go away, CC, you’re on the right path.

The following is incorrect; I was mistaken (but AdBlock does work):

Worse: The Princeton Review window is not an ad, but part of the site (at least today). AdBlock is blocking the “regular” ads on the new site (for me). But some report not seeing the PR window.

And don’t forget the “PG&E Checkup” ads.

I don’t see a princeton review ad, but if you use an ad blocker you can generally right-click on something and tell the ad blocker to block it.

Ok. This made ME happy. In Firefox, if I open my bookmarks pane on the left side, the column with the video ad gets shoved off-screen. It’s not the greatest workaround, but better than nothing.

The following is incorrect; I was mistaken:

It looks the the PR “ad” just got turned off.

And this thread was started before the “Fresh New Look” format! Now the video ad window is even more intrusive and obnoxious. I’m gonna go out on a limb and theorize that ad revenue, not user experience, was the driver of the new design.

Not for me; I still have it.

Ok, I see. I have AdBlock and was seeing only the PR “ad”. I set AdBlock to Pause and saw all normal ads on the page, including PR. Then I set AdBlock to Resume and the PR disappeared; setting Pause indeed still turns PR back on. An AdBlock “feature” I presume that left PR on the first time.

But this seems odd: When PR is absent, a “New Discussion” button appears in its place. If PR is present, is there another way to start a new discussion?

Is CC going to pay for me to go to school for CS to figure all of this out? Please send me the info for my FAFSA. Thanks.
