adteam

so i really wanted to do ucla adteam last year but i wanted to explore other things first. i'm really interested in applying/joining and becoming involved this year, though. anyone have any information on adteam (other than what's online)--advice, anything? pretty competitive to get into, yeah? i don't think my photoshop skills are up to par but i am ready and eager to learn and do whatever i can...feedback?

allie................................

adteam is my great love. seriously.

im too tired right now. will answer tomorrow.

but sigh.

i miss adteam.

k so i promised to answer this last week but stuff was crazy.

competitive: yes. we generally get around 100+ applications. there are usually 40-45 total spots on the team, and there are usually at least 10-20 people returning. after you submit the application, you'll be called for an interview which will determine whether you're offered a position on the team. the interview is as much to gauge personality and how well you'd mesh with the culture of the team as it is to see how into advertising you are. while the main objective of ad team is obviously to put together a kick ass campaign for competition (which we ALWAYS do), it's also a really awesome social opportunity. because we work so closely over the year, it's important that we're not just teammates but friends.

photoshop skills are absolutely not necessary unless you want to be on Creative, but honestly we get so many awesome desma apps that Creative tends to be filled with desma people (they're really the reason our campaigns are so professionally put together and stand out amongst other teams). but since we do create comprehensive holistic campaigns, we need creatives, planners, strategists, etc. last year we had a very design-focused team (~15-20 design majors) and i wouldn't be surprised if next year's supervisors (who i love and adore) keep this up since they're both former Creatives. but anyway, don't let that discourage you. there are definitely spaces for people who aren't already proficient in design.

if you do decide to apply and make it onto the team, expect it to be pretty hardcore. the new sups are DETERMINED to avenge this year's ridiculous competition results and its really important to them that the campaign is awesome. i can't tell you who next year's sponsor is, but like this year's, it's BIG. it should be a pretty awesome campaign and i expect that chris and jesse will lead it really well based on what i know of their ideas and their talents.

i really recommend ad team only to those who are fairly serious about advertising and who think that they may actually want to pursue a career in the field. while some people decide after the campaign development that its actually not something they want to go into, they all at least have a genuine curiosity and interest in the field. this is obviously important since you spend so much time on the campaign. its important to have an interest in the industry so you're thinking of new ways to benefit the campaign outside of meetings so that you have lots to contribute when you get together. it really is an amazing experience though and has proven so rewarding to myself and all of my friends who have done it.

beyond the hard-copy book that you get which details the campaign (and allows you to show off to potential employers in interviews), its so great make friends who are all so into the stuff you're into. like we honestly get together and talk about advertising and its so fun because so few of our other friends have that interest. lol two days ago i ran into an ad team friend at the mall and the first thing she said to me was how she heard the funniest quote about advertising on NPR and was so excited she saw me because she knew i'd get it. and then beyond just being friends in school with people in advertising, you really make awesome networking opportunities for post-graduation. i know so many people now in various aspects of the industry just because i did ad team with them. they're great connections to have.

i don't know. i really feel like ad team MADE my college experience. i was a transfer and had been involved in magazine publishing at my CC but i knew during my transfer that it wasn't something i wanted to pursue professionally. i kind of fell into ad team thanks to hearing about it at a new students department meeting and it totally gave me this new direction to pursue. beyond that, i was placed on the internet advertising team and while i initially felt like i didn't have any interest in internet advertising, i grew to love it (especially with our most recent campaign) and now i have a full-time position in that sector of the industry. and i'm positive that my ad team experience influenced my chances of being hired tremendously. we're a really revered team by professionals in the industry (a major top 4 agency invited us to present to their staff and later offered several of us jobs a few weeks ago) and it's shown. all of us who decided to pursue careers in advertising have been very very successful in securing pretty awesome positions right out of the gate.

What do adteam members usually major in?

really anything. i think you'd find that the bulk of ad team are either comm majors or desma majors, which makes sense since people who major in either of those probably have a fairly specific interest in the field. but we definitely also have people with other majors, usually psych or soc or something in that realm. but major really isn't a determinate as much as personality and drive and genuine interest in advertising.
